There were no Mega Millions jackpot winners, but one lucky New York resident did manage to win $1 million last night. The winning New York ticket matched all five white balls, minus the Mega Ball. The Multiplier had not been added to the ticket. If it had been, the prize would have been multiplied by three.
There were 20 match 4 plus the Mega Ball winners. They won $5,000 each. Three people added the Mega Ball Multiplier to their tickets winning a total of $15,000 each. The odds of winning the match 4 plus the Mega Ball are 1 in 739,688. The odds of winning the Mega Ball jackpot are 1 in 258,890,850. As the Mega Millions jackpot continues to rise and has now passed the $100 million mark, more people are showing an interest in playing the popular jackpot lottery game.

Mega Millions and Powerball are the two most popular jackpot, lottery games across the United States. Both games are governed by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and are known for their jackpots that can amass large amounts. The largest jackpot in lottery history occurred on Jan. 13, 2016, when the Powerball jackpot climbed to $1.58 billion. There were three winning tickets sold in that drawing. One ticket was sold in Tennessee to a couple named Lisa and John Robinson. Another ticket was sold in Melbourne, Florida. The winner of the Florida, billion dollar Powerball ticket will come forward today in a live press conference to accept their prize. The California winner has yet to come forward, though there have been numerous rumors and speculation about who that winner is. There have even been rumors that the California billion-dollar jackpot winner overdosed on cocaine while surrounded by hookers and died just days after winning the Powerball jackpot.

Winning the lottery is a dream come true for many people, but if you don’t have the right tools in place, winning a Powerball jackpot or Mega Millions jackpot can quickly become a nightmare. One area that has caused great controversy and speculation is that some states require lottery winners to come forward publicly. All three Powerball winners, the ones in Tennessee, California, and Florida live in states that require them to come forward. Some argue that revealing the identity of Mega Millions and Powerball winners can actually prove harmful to the winner in the long run. Many financial experts believe there is added safety for those who suddenly become millionaires by taking a cash annuity option as opposed to a lump sum payment.
Statistics show that many lottery winners become broke within five years. Those who win the Mega Millions or Powerball jackpots and choose a lump sum payment are putting themselves in a position where they might succumb to frequent spending, quit their jobs, give large amounts of money to people, buy outlandish gifts, or make other extravagant purchases and simply not have the skills or tools in place to handle large amounts of money. Additionally, lottery winners become the target of many scams and without having adequate financial tools available can become victimized.
Mega Millions jackpot winners and Powerball jackpot winners should build a team around them who they can trust. They need trusted, professional financial advisors, a licensed CPA, and an experienced tax attorney who can help with legal advice. Winning the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots may be a dream come true or a lucky break, but it takes skill, knowledge and wisdom to keep things in order and prevent that dream from becoming a nightmare.
Stay tuned as tonight will be the next Powerball jackpot drawing and we’ll bring you coverage as the Florida billion-dollar Powerball jackpot winner is revealed. The next Mega Millions jackpot drawing will be on Friday, Feb. 19 at 11:00 p.m. ET. We’ll have that drawing for you and the winning numbers’ results live.
