‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Cast Photo: Marvel Begins Production On Second Installment

The rock and roll-esque super heroes are back!

On Wednesday, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 got the green light as Marvel Studios announced production commencement for the second installment of the popular flick. And to the delight of fans, the super hero franchise released the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast photo/team pic for the film’s sequel on Twitter, according to Comic Book Resources.

Marvel issued a long-awaited press release about Guardian‘s upcoming sequel. The good news is that all five of our favorite dysfunctional “heroes” of the galaxy are returning with Star Lord: Baby Groot, Drax, Gamora, and Rocket. The cast photo is pretty nifty. The group appears to channel bada** rockers. There’s even obligatory lighting for drama in the backdrop. And as sources said, it makes perfect sense that the lights and effects are prominent in the team pic — considering the use of ’70s music in the 2014 Guardians movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither ). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Drax; Vin Diesel (‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Furious 7’) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (‘Joy,’ ‘American Sniper’) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Furious 7)…”

Director, James Gunn, who arguably has one of the best jobs in the world right now, took to his personal Facebook page and shared how stoked he is about production. He also couldn’t help but fanboy over new additions to the cast — Kurt Russell in particular.

“I never thought anyone was missing from our island of misfit toys, but now that these folks are here there feels like there was.”

Gunn also gave shout-outs to a strong support cast of creative thinkers behind the scenes. Many players had their hands in other blockbuster Marvel projects.

“Vol. 2” of Guardians of the Galaxy has a tough act to follow; the first project achieved an impressive triad of milestones. The first Guardians became the most profitable project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU); the first run earned nearly $800 million at the box office; the film’s soundtrack (“Awesome Mix: Volume 1”) earned the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. It featured Peter Quill’s mixtape selections.

Speaking of Quill aka Star Lord (Pratt’s character), the Galaxy cast members continue their journey through space in search of the mystery behind their leader’s family tree, so to speak. His parentage continues to be a subject of debate: some think he jacked the title from some other dude, who was the rightful owner. Others say Quill was “chosen” to inherit his father’s (Jason or J’Son) rule.

On the latter: Gunn quickly ruled out that possibility in a tweet.

Supposedly, Jake is Quill’s dad as the result of his mom’s affair. In the comics, she died when aliens opened fire on her at home, which is the reason SL is hellbent on getting revenge. That version is discounted in favor of the other “J” dad. Yea, it’s complicated, and Gunn is not dropping hints — yet.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to open in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017. Production is underway at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.
