As the Mega Millions jackpot continues to climb, more people are expressing excitement about playing the lottery game. Tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot has an estimated cash value of $62 million. Those who win the Mega Millions jackpot have their choice of collecting all their earnings, minus taxes in a lump sum payment, or having their winnings spread out over 29 payments plus an initial, upfront payment. Annuity payments increase each year to help deflect the rising costs of inflation and living.

Powerball and Mega Millions are the two largest jackpot games played in the United States. Mega Millions has several advantages when compared to Powerball. First, Mega Millions tickets are cheaper to purchase. A Mega Millions ticket costs $1, whereas Powerball tickets are $2. Because Mega Millions jackpots are smaller than Powerball, the odds of winning are better. Mega Millions jackpots always start off at $15 million and increase by $5 million. Powerball jackpots always reset to $40 million. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338, and the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 258,890,850.

While a Mega Millions win typically means the prize amount is what was shown during the live drawing, California uses a slightly different system that can result in larger prizes for their residents. California uses a pari-mutuel system, and this means the prize amount incorporates the amount of winners as well as the amount of lottery tickets that were sold. You can also add a Megaplier to your ticket. This will increase the amount won in non-jackpot prizes. By adding the Megaplier, many people have won second-tier and third-tier Mega Millions prizes and enjoyed substantial winnings.

One question many people have with regard to playing lottery games like Mega Millions and Powerball is whether they can purchase their lottery tickets online. There is no definitive answer to this question. Because Mega Millions is played in different states and territories, it is up to the local state lotteries to determine whether online ticket purchases can be made. Be forewarned, however, as this is one area where many scam artists like to target unsuspecting people. Never purchase tickets online for lottery games unless you are absolutely certain the seller is legitimate and operating through your state lottery. You can find all state lotteries that play Mega Millions at the official website. Once on your local state lottery’s page, look for information regarding online ticket sales and rules of play.
