Joey Feek Cancer Update: Joey And Rory Feek Lose Grammy Award For Best Country Duo To Little Big Town

Tonight’s the night… the night Joey and Rory Feek have been waiting for since they found out they were nominated for a Grammy Award last month for their version of “If I Needed You.”

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards kick off tonight at 8 ET, and Joey and Rory already have their plans for how they plan to watch it. Unfortunately, the country music duo wasn’t able to attend the ceremony due to Joey’s current medical condition, but they made sure to send three people- Rory’s daughters Heidi and Hopie Feek, and their manager Aaron- in their place to accept the award if they were to win.

“We will gather around Joey’s bed and turn the tv-in-the-corner on and watch the Grammy Awards – Joey’s mama and daddy and her three sisters and their kids – all of us having a big-time together,” Rory wrote on his blog This Life I Live.“We’ll watch the presenters and performances and scan the cutaways to the audience for our daughters and our manager in the sea of people dressed-to-the-nines for the big night. And we will smile at each other and wonder how in the world we got so blessed. How we’ve come so far without going anywhere at all.”

Joey tried repeatedly to get Rory to go to the Grammy’s with his daughters, even secretly buying him a plane ticket, but he said absolutely not. Throughout her whole battle with cancer, Rory has never left Joey’s side, and he doesn’t plan to do so now. Therefore, he will watch the awards ceremony with his “bride” in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their family and friends.

“I can’t leave her,” Rory continued. “I won’t. I have done many foolish things and made lots of mistakes in my life, but this isn’t going to be one of them. Instead, I will be sitting beside her and cheering on Little Big Town, and Blake Shelton and Charles and all the talented folks who are nominated in our category and others. It’s an honor for us to just be a part of that night, it truly is.”

Even though Joey and Rory won’t be at the ceremony, Rory made sure to write something special for his daughter’s to read if they are presented with the award.

“The girls have asked me to write something for them to read… just in case,” Rory revealed. “I told them not to worry about it, but they insist. I can’t imagine our names being called. But then again, Joey and I also couldn’t have imagined us being where we are at all… the good parts or the bad.”

“So I will write something. And when she’s awake, I will run what I’ve written by Joey like I do all these blog posts. And she will say ‘it’s beautiful honey’, and then gently point out the words I’ve misspelled and let me know if I’ve left off something important, or am coming across sounding arrogant or insincere.”

“She’s so smart and good.”

“I might have the words that bring characters to life. But my wife has the character that brings my words to life.”

Unfortunately, Heidi, Hopie, and Aaron didn’t get the opportunity to read the speech because it was announced before the red carpet ended that Little Big Home had taken home the Grammy Award in this category, beating out Joey+Rory, Brothers Osborne, Charles Kelley, Dierks Bentley & Eric Paslay, and Blake Shelton Featuring Ashley Monroe.

Prior to the Grammy Awards, Rory shared a heartwarming photo on their Facebook page. In the picture, which has been “liked” over 100,000 times, Joey and Rory’s daughter Indiana (“Indy” for short) can be seen getting her hair done by Joey’s aunts in preparation to watch the Grammy’s with her “mama and papa.” Rory captioned the photo by saying, “…Indy getting her hair done by her Aunts for Grammy watching w her mama and papa tonight (if it’s not past her bedtime).”

Although Joey and Rory didn’t win the Grammy Award, it wasn’t because their fellow country music singers weren’t rooting for them. Last week, Blake Shelton, who was nominated for his song “Lonely Tonight,” tweeted a message, revealing that he hoped the Feek’s would take home the award.

“I’d LOVE to win a Grammy but honestly want to see @joeyandrory win that one,” Shelton wrote.

This week has already been a big one for Joey and Rory. On Friday, their final album Hymns That Are Important To Us, was released. Then on Sunday, Joey and Rory shared a romantic Valentine’s Day together, and then on Wednesday, the couple will celebrate their daughter’s second birthday.
