Kanye West A ‘Crazy Genius?’ An Inside Look At Yeezy Season 3 Launch [Video]

Nobody is doubting the musical brilliance that is Kanye West, but is the rapper/fashion mogul really just a crazy genius? After the Yeezy Season 3 show, some fans are beginning to wonder.

In a behind the scenes look at Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion show, one model, speaking anonymously The Muse, revealed a backstage world of quirky requests and questionable directions (or lack thereof). While Kanye hired established fashion models to represent the Yeezy Season 3 line, West also had upwards of 1,000 extra models at the show.

Invited to be in the Yeezy Season 3 show just one day before the event, the insider was instructed to be at the call at 8 a.m., but after showing up, the extras were required to wait outside in 19-degree weather for about 45 minutes, the model confessed. The extras were then filed into buses, and taken to an unknown location after signing non-disclosure agreements and being forced to surrender their cellphones after being “bused to a warehouse in New Jersey,” where they were dressed.

Claiming the backstage of the live-streamed event was like being “herded into a concentration camp,” the model revealed that she was told by a Kanye West staffer that one of the “instructions was that the theme was channeling a Rwandan refugee camp.” The insider also revealed that the clothing the extra models wore were not actually from Kanye West’s fashion collection; instead, they were “thrift store finds that I think they dyed to be the same color scheme,” and their shoes were from Adidas, a major partner with West.

Calling the experience “literally like a factory,” the insider confessed that she “felt like cattle,” and that the Kanye West event was “like a really big assembly line.” Describing the backstage at Yeezy Season 3 as “weird,” the model claimed she was only paid $100 for about 10 hours of work, which left her stiff after “standing for like an hour and a half” in a single pose. According to the insider, the extra models were instructed by Kanye West staff “to be statues” during the fashion show.

The Yeezy Season 3 fashion show itself, during which Kanye played his new album, The Life Of Pablo, met with rave reviews, and was attended by a long list of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and the rest of her family. During the event, the family wore clothing from Kanye West’s collection, including Kylie Jenner, who stunned in a revealing but sparkly top, distressed skirt, and slouchy white boots.

Although Kanye West is “arguably the most important pop artist of his era,” according to the Guardian, West is also lauded as a “brilliant madman” by the likes of Madonna, who advised in a past interview that West is full of “brilliant ideas, if you can get him to pay attention long enough.” Indeed, the Yeezy Season 3 insider also claims that West “actually is crazy,” and indicated in her The Muse confession that West probably knows it, referring to a line from one of the rappers songs which boasts “[n]ame one genius that isn’t crazy.”

During a 2005 interview, West claimed that he is “the closest that hip-hop is getting to God” but later explained to the Guardian that his over-the-top personality is something like performance art. According to Kanye himself, it is “like I’m walking on this tightrope. It’s like, damn, what if he falls? And if I do make it, it’s like, damn, he made it! But either way you’re saying damn. Everybody else is just walking on the ground.”

With the release of The Life Of Pablo, which is not just making headlines for its brilliance but also because West takes a jab at Taylor Swift, fans are still left wondering exactly what to think of Kanye West.
