‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Actor Says He Won’t Replace McDreamy

With the new arrivals on the set of Grey’s Anatomy, it begs the question if whether or not Meredith Grey will find love again. That said, one new actor on the show is warding off fans who think he’s out to replace the character made famous by Patrick Dempsey.

Actor Giacomo Gianniotti joined the cast as intern Andrew DeLuca right after Derek Shepherd, the head of neurology and the love of Meredith’s life died. It looks like in an attempt to do damage control, Gianniotti told the New York Post that his character will not romantically pursue Meredith Grey.

“I came in directly after they killed off Patrick Dempsey [Dr. Derek Shepherd] so there was this weird stigma that I was replacing him, which is not true at all.”

That said, fans aren’t convinced seeing as he was recently promoted to a series regular on the show. When that happens, it usually means a romance is going to bloom, and since fans guessed that it would be Meredith from the beginning, this only added fuel to the fire.

Still, the actor insists that’s not the case.

“I’m just a new character on the show. I’m not filling any void. I’ve been getting those crazy tweets: ‘He’s not Derek,’ ‘He’d better stay away from Meredith.'”

He continued, “But Andrew won’t have any [romantic] intentions with Meredith so fans don’t have to worry about any threat.”

There’s just this one fact to consider — for a few episodes intern Andrew has been hooking up with Meredith’s half-sister Maggie Pierce. As stated, Maggie is Meredith’s half-sister — the product of Ellis Grey and Dr. Richard Webber. Ellis had Maggie when Meredith was very young, and the pregnancy was a result of an affair, so she decided to give her up for adoption. Dr. Webber had no clue that he had a daughter, let alone that he had one that was a fully grown adult. He found this out pretty early on in her arrival. Maggie, the jittery loveable oversharer, was hired to work at the hospital after Meredith’s BFF and “person” Cristina Yang left in 2014.

As for spoilers, the Inquisitr reported that Meredith Grey will get attacked by a patient in the upcoming episode set to air on February 11. The effects are said to be long-term, so even if another new doctor comes in, it’s probably safe to say that she won’t be looking for love anytime soon.

Actress Caterina Scorsone, who plays Meredith’s sister-in-law Amelia said that the attack is “brutal.”

“The attack itself is shocking. It’s quite brutal, and the damage is extensive. It’s not just a couple bruises. It’s a pretty long-term situation.”

The episode, which was directed by Denzel Washington, will leave Grey’s leading doc in bad shape. She’s dealing with effects that are expected to affect her job at the Gray Sloan hospital. It’s not said what those effects are, but the show has dealt with PTSD with Dr. Owen Hunt, as he dealt with serving over in the middle east. Since Meredith has struck up a supportive friendship with Owen, maybe the two will bond in that way?

What do you think are the injuries that Meredith will suffer? And do you think Maggie and Andrew’s casual relationship will stay that way, or will they find themselves in a romance beyond the closets and on call rooms of the hospital?
