While there were no winning jackpot tickets, there were two Mega Millions winning tickets that matched all five white balls without the Mega Ball, earning the second-tier prize. One Mega Millions Match-5 winning ticket was sold in California and the winner won $2.2 million. California has a pari-mutuel prize payment requirement that increases the size of the win.

The second Mega Millions Match-5 winning ticket was sold in Colorado. That winning ticket had used the Megaplier option increasing the win to a hefty $4 million.

The third-tier prize consists of matching four of the five white balls plus the Mega Ball. There were 14 winning tickets who were Mega Millions Match-4 and the Mega Ball winners. None of the winning tickets used the Megaplier, so each ticket won $5,000.

Two hundred sixty-nine winning tickets were Mega Millions match 4 for a total of $500 each. Thirty-five winning tickets used the Megaplier for a win of $2,000.

Together there was more than $8.8 million won in non-jackpot prizes on February 9, 2016.

Mega Millions and Powerball are the two most popular lottery jackpot games. Powerball underwent recent changes and costs $2 per play. Mega Millions tickets cost $1 per play. You play Mega Millions by either choosing a Quick Pick ticket, an Easy Pick ticket, or selecting your own numbers. With a Quick or Easy pick, the computer randomly chooses your numbers. While some players have a method for choosing their own numbers, more Quick Pick tickets are coming up winners. Mega Millions uses five white balls between the numbers one and 75 and one gold-colored, Mega Ball between the numbers one and 15.

There are nine ways to win Mega Millions, and the odds of winning any prize are one in 14.7. Prizes range in value from $1 to the jackpot prize. Powerball jackpots are larger than Mega Millions, as Powerball jackpots start off at $40 million and Mega Millions jackpots begin at $15 million. A Mega Million jackpot increases by $5 million when no one wins the jackpot, however, increased ticket sales can also cause the jackpot to rise.

Those who match the Mega Ball number win $1 and those who match the Mega Ball and one of the white balls win $2. Matching three white balls or two white balls and the Mega Ball will get you $5. These figures will increase if the Megaplier is used.

Matching three white Mega Millions balls plus the gold Mega Ball is a $50 prize. The odds are one in 10,720, and this too will increase if the Megaplier is used. In last night’s drawing, there were 143 Megaplier winners who won $200.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are one in 258,890,850.

Do you play Mega Millions? Both Mega Millions and Powerball have enjoyed renewed interest since January 13’s record-breaking Powerball drawing that reached $1.58 billion. There were three winning tickets in that drawing: one in California, Florida, and Tennessee. There are two options for those who win the Mega Millions jackpot. You can choose a cash option or an annuity. With the cash option, the winner receives a lump sum payment once. With the annuity, the estimated value of the jackpot is spread out over one initial payment and then 29 yearly payments. Many financial experts recommend lottery winners take the annuity option as opposed to the lump sum cash payout.
