Ariel Winter displayed breast reduction scars from a June, 2015, surgery, as she walked the red carpet of the twenty-second annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 30, 2016, in Los Angeles. The 18-year-old Modern Family star sported a floor-length Romona Keveža strapless dress at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, to reveal evidence of having gone under the knife to rid herself of a ponderous breast problem.
According to Los Angeles Times, Ariel Winter had no compunction about showing marks of her ordeal to fans at the glitzy affair. She tweeted her thoughts after the show.
“Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all. :)”
Ariel Winter’s reduction from size 32F to 34D breasts went viral on social media during the summer of 2015, as much as her decision to undergo the surgical procedure. It was the latest addition to dramatic events in her life ranging from statutory rape by her ex-boyfriend to divorcing her parents.
People magazine noted that Ariel has been defending her choice of dress that showed her surgery scars to the S.A.G. Awards attendees. Winter posted an Instagram Tuesday, February 2, encouraging her followers to feel just as body-positive.
“Embrace all that you are … Scars & everything. Your imperfections make you perfectly you #loveyourself.”
Aside from back and neck discomfort, Ariel has always maintained that unwanted attention on her breasts prompted her to opt for surgery. She explained how upset and uncomfortable she got by the way she was known for her attention-grabbing chest size.
Winter objected to the fact that women in her industry were over-sexualized and treated like objects. Once she developed, she couldn’t really play 12 or 13 or 14 anymore because she was being pegged for 18 or 19, though she was not 18 yet.
In an interview with Glamour News, published August 12, 2015, petite 5-foot-1 Ariel revealed how she was dealing with more than an awkward growth spurt. She recalled her transformation from flat-chested teenager to well-endowed sex symbol.
“I remember being in my sister’s wedding and being so flat and thinking, ‘I just wish I would grow boobs!’ and then overnight I did. But then they kept growing and growing and growing and it didn’t seem like they were going to stop. I was 15 years old with [size] F [breasts]. It’s like, ‘How do you navigate that?’ ”
The Los Angeles native was born Ariel Winter Workman to parents Chrisoula Batistas and Glenn Workman. Influencing her entry into the acting profession were sister Shanelle Gray, an actress, and brother Jimmy Workman, an actor. Ariel Winter credits her physical endowments to her mother, Chrisoula, who is of Greek heritage, and is described as a “professional stage mom” responsible for Shanelle and Jimmy becoming successful child stars.
Burdened with estranged parents, Shanelle Gray filed to become her sister’s guardian in October, 2012, citing Ariel’s physical and emotional abuse by her mother. In August, 2013, her brother, Jimmy Workman, contested the arrangement by filing to assume her custody from Shanelle. Permanent guardianship was granted to Shanelle on May 5, 2014, and a year later, on May 15, 2015, Ariel Winter tweeted her fans to say that she was officially emancipated from her parents.
Amid the legal mess lingers a police report filed by Chrisoula accusing 18-year-old actor Cameron Palatas of having sex with Ariel, who was fourteen then, according to the New York Post. In her accusation, Chrisoula claimed to have caught Cameron, who plays the character Jake in A.N.T. Farm on the Disney Channel, in bed with Winter on September 24, 2012.
Ultimately, Chrisoula was stripped of her guardianship, ordered to keep a distance of one hundred yards from Ariel Winter, and denied access to the Modern Family actress’ bank account.
