George Clooney Tells Embarrassing Proposal Story

George Clooney is usually the guy that could sweep many women off of their feet. He has done this numerous times playing the leading man in many films, and has even managed to maintain this appearance on the red carpet, but when it came to proposing to his present wife, Amal Clooney, he couldn’t get the point across clearly.

Clooney was promoting the film Hail Caesar!, a film about the golden age of Hollywood told by the Coen brothers, when he stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show. During the appearance, he told the talk show host of his embarrassing proposal story.

The actor explained the story with great gusto as he retold what happened when he proposed to Amal, and she had no idea what he was doing, even while it was happening. For starters, Clooney said that they hadn’t talked about marriage before he decided to propose to Amal, despite tabloids having them engaged from week one of dating. So, it makes sense that she was clueless to the proposal.

“It was one of those horrible moments we didn’t talk about it. It wasn’t like ‘oh, maybe we should get married’ or anything. I plotted the whole thing out.”

He even incorporated his aunt Rosemary Clooney’s song, “Why Should I,” as part of his proposal. Clooney had put it on in the background during dinner and cooked for Amal. The big reveal was that the ring was hidden, and even when Amal saw the ring, she still didn’t understand what was happening.

“I’ve got it all set up, timed out and the song is coming and she gets up to go wash the dishes, which she’s never done, and I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ and she comes back in. And finally I said, ‘Ya know, I blew out the candle’ and I said, ‘I think the lighter’s in the box behind you.’ And she reaches around and she pulls out the box and I’ve got just the ring sitting in there and she pulls it out and she looks at it and she’s like, ‘It’s a ring’ – like as if somebody had left it there some other time.”

He continued: “[I] said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you,’ and she kept looking at the ring and she was looking at me and she was like ‘Oh my God.’ ”

Then Clooney jokingly got impatient with Amal, as she made him wait for an answer due to her shock when she finally figured out what was going on.

“It was one of those funny things. From the minute we met, we just hit it off and from the minute we met we sort of felt like we were gonna be together.”

Despite the proposal snafu, Amal and George have enjoyed wedded bliss so far. The two got married in a ceremony in Italy in 2014, and prior to the wedding. they obtained a marriage license at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in the U.K..

As the Inquisitr reported, Clooney isn’t shy about talking about the happiness he’s feeling as a married man. After swearing off marriage after his divorce back in the 90s, it seems like he has finally found his match in Amal.

He sat down with Extra and shared the key to a happy marriage now that he’s been in one for a while. Clooney said that the key to remaining happy is to stay close, even if they are miles and miles away. The one way they’ve achieved that is through technology. “FaceTime, we’ll do that, mostly it’s just try not to go very long.”
