With so many names out due to injury, WWE is looking to do whatever they can possibly do to make WrestleMania 32 a huge event. It’s just proving to be such a huge task because of all of those that won’t be able to participate in a match or even show their face. That being said, Vince McMahon is trying to pull out all the stops and the latest rumor has one of four huge names set to have a big-time role in the main event match.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, and Batista — these four names would instantly draw attention from wrestling fans. Two of the four are already confirmed and booked to appear at WrestleMania 32.
The other two don’t have a deal in place, nor are they scheduled to appear at the huge pay-per-view in Texas, but Vince McMahon certainly is trying. As of now, these four names are the top candidates to be the special guest referee in the main event that will pit Triple H against a yet unnamed opponent for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
It’s been long known that Steve Austin was going to be at WrestleMania 32, and he recently was a guest of Jim Ross on The Ross Report and discussed things. As of about three weeks ago, Austin said nothing had yet been discussed creatively with WWE, but he has an idea he needs to keep quiet about.
“Whether we do something in the ring, or if I’m part of the show — it remains to be seen. A big part of the WrestleMania weekend for me is going to the Hall Of Fame. By hook or by crook, I see myself being there.”
The second candidate is The Rock, who just returned to WWE on Monday Night Raw last week and in a huge way.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, The Rock is still in a position where he can’t wrestle at WrestleMania 32 due to insurance issues with films he is shooting. Some have said he would be in the corner of Roman Reigns or The Usos, but he could also end up as the special guest referee in the main event.
Either Austin or Rock as the guest referee instantly makes the main event that much better. It’s expected that Roman Reigns will take on Triple H for the WWE Title, and that could result in some fan backlash.
A face-off or two between Triple H and either of his WWE Attitude Era rivals in Austin or Rock would make many fans forget the bad.
Just a little over a week ago, Vince McMahon met with Batista who was backstage at the Royal Rumble in Orlando. Batista was there at the request of WWE, and he met with McMahon about possibly appearing at WrestleMania 32 in a non-wrestling capacity.
Batista has reportedly turned down the offer for now, but has left the door open, just in case.
PW Insider is reporting that the offer from McMahon was for Batista to serve as the special guest referee in the main event. He turned it down as he reportedly doesn’t want his return to be a one-off thing and would rather comeback for storyline purposes.
With Austin and The Rock possibly doing something else on the WrestleMania 32 card and Batista turning it down, will WWE still go after a special guest referee for the main event? Well, yes, they will, and they have another legendary name in mind for it too.
Wrestling News is reporting that Shawn Michaels is being thought of by Vince McMahon to be the referee in the main event. In hopes of getting Roman Reigns over, WWE could stack the main event by having The Rock in Reigns’ corner, McMahon in Triple H’s corner, and HBK as the referee.
Last last year, there were rumors swirling that WWE wanted Shawn Michaels to come out of retirement for a match at WrestleMania 32. That question was presented to Michaels in November, and he gave a very straight-forward answer.

Now, it’s unlikely that he will come out of retirement to wrestle a match, but since then, he may have come to an agreement to at least appear at the big event in his home state.
WrestleMania 32 is two months away, and it needs some big-time star power in order to make it one of the biggest events in WWE history. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Rock will be there. Batista and/or Shawn Michaels may be there. The question now is, will one of them be the special guest referee for the main event?
Only time will tell.
