On Jan. 27, 2016, the official Mega Millions site released a press update about some of the Mega Millions recent winners.
The release began by stating a Connecticut ticket was sold that matched the five white balls, and the Megaplier was used, meaning the winner increased their winnings from $1 million to $2 million.
“A lucky ticket-holder in Connecticut purchased the optional Megaplier, and was rewarded with a $2 million prize in Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing after matching the five white balls 14, 27, 39, 50 and 69. Because no ticket matched those five numbers plus the Mega Ball of 2, the jackpot rolls to an estimated $56 million ($35 million cash) for the next drawing on Friday, January 29. The Megaplier for the drawing was 2x, so the winning Connecticut ticket is worth $2 million instead of the standard $1 million. All non-jackpot winning tickets are multiplied by the optional Megaplier, which ranges from 2x to 5x.”

The release continued to discuss the Virginia Match 5 winner who won big in the Jan. 26 drawing.
“There was another Match 5 winning ticket in the January 26 drawing, sold in Virginia and worth $1 million.”
The official Mega Millions site did an interview with the Virginia winner Louise Ritner. She stated that she had been stuck indoors due to the snowy weather, but needed to get out and buy a few things at the store. She never expected that when she entered the Bo’s Belly Barn, she’d leave $1 million dollars richer. Like many recent winners, Ritner selected the Easy Pick option that enabled the computer to randomly choose her Mega Millions numbers. Ritner is retired, and though she has no immediate plans for spending the winnings, she said she will most likely get a new car. She spoke about her reaction to winning.
“It feels wonderful, if it ever sinks in,” she said. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”
The announcement also addressed the winner of the $169 million Mega Millions jackpot from January 8. Whoever won that ticket has yet to come forward. Likewise, two of the three winners of the $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot have yet to come forward and claim their prize.
“The jackpot was last won in New York on January 8; the owner(s) of that $169 million ticket have yet to come forward.”
