Angelina Jolie says that working together with Brad Pitt on a recent film nearly destroyed their marriage, reports Design & Trend.
The famous couple fell in love with each other back in 2005 while they worked on set together during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith despite Pitt still being married to Jennifer Anniston.
Even with their luck at love on a previous movie, on the set of By the Sea, where the duo plays a miserable married couple, a different kind of sparks were sent flying.
Angelina Jolie, who wrote and directed the film, knew that the movie was going to challenge the couple's marriage and could potentially end it.
"It was our way of testing ourselves. We knew that if we could get through this, we'd come out even stronger and happier. And we did," Jolie told the Express.
Jolie, who has always had a unique take on relationships -- she and ex-husband Billy Bob Thorton walked down the aisle carrying a vial of each other's blood -- also said that co-starring in the film with Brad was their way of testing themselves.
She continued, "We've always liked putting ourselves through challenges, even though it was maybe a little more dangerous for us as a couple. I don't think we want to go through it again though."
The actress also admitted in her interview with the Express that the first week was the toughest as they continually bumped heads on set, saying, "The first week was the hardest because Brad knew I was worried and impatient."
Nevertheless, Jolie claims that communication with her husband was key to getting through it, adding, "You don't want to drag your own personal issues into the process, but we had a talk and decided we were going to be completely honest with each other."
However, a source close to the couple told Hollywood Life that a storm has been brewing inside the couple's marriage for some time now.
"Angie has some serious dark demons that have never entirely let go and it is still affecting her life and marriage. Her wild lifestyle when she was younger and her intense surgeries to avoid getting breast and ovarian cancer have taken a toll on her as a person and a life partner. Some of her issues force her to retreat into isolation and pull away from Brad and the kids. It is impossible to be entirely free from who she once was."
The inside source, per Design & Trend, also added that while Jolie does her best to be a good mom and wife, her personal struggles continually put a strain on those relationships.
"Angie tries to be a good mom and wife but it is difficult with her personal problems and she struggles. Brad was initially attracted to her dark side, but when she goes to this dark place she definitely pushes Brad away. It can be really hard on him. He feels he has been more than patient with Angie, but his confidence in their happiness is wearing thin."
With the alleged happiness being stretched thin by Jolie's personal dark side, a recent trip to Thailand for the couple's New Year's vacation brought things to a head. But the vacation didn't pan out the way Brad had hoped, Radar Online reports.
"Brad was hoping the whole family could bond, but that didn't work out either."
The source also said that even after a lavish holiday, tensions between Jolie and Brad are higher than ever.
"Despite a luxurious holiday that cost $1 million, Brad and Angie are worse off than ever. The vacation solidified the belief that their marriage is beyond repair. A divorce is definitely coming this year."
While rumors may be starting to spread about the couple's struggles, neither Jolie nor Brad have confirmed or even mention that a divorce in on the horizon.
