‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Casting News — Kim Basinger To Star Opposite Jamie Dornan As Christian Grey’s BDSM Mentor

Although there are still a number of key parts yet to be cast for Fifty Shades Darker, speculation can now end in regards to the role of Elena Lincoln. According to a report from Variety, Universal has officially cast Kim Basinger for the part of Christian Grey’s (Jamie Dornan) ex-lover and current business associate.

Basinger’s character, according to Coming Soon, was first introduced in E.L. James’ second novel in her Fifty Shades of Grey series. The character also goes by the name of Mrs. Robinson and is the one who first taught Christian about BDSM, acting as his first dominant partner.

The casting news follows what has proven to be a sluggish start for production of the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel. There have been a number of different reasons behind these delays, with one being the departure of director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Despite pulling down some $570 million in box-office sales, Taylor-Johnson decided to leave the franchise due to on-set conflicts with James. This left the sequel without a director and a screenwriter after Keely Marcel followed Taylor-Johnson’s lead.

Fortunately, the studio hired James Foley to direct the sequel just in time to avoid future delays. In order to fill the screenwriter position, the studio hired Niall Leonard, who also happens to be E.L. James’ husband. With all these new individuals involved in the project, the end product is likely to be very different than the first film.

Along with the hiring of the new director, casting issues have also been a source of delays for the project. However, in light of the recent announcement that Basinger has joined the sequel, fans should expect more exciting casting news to surface in the coming weeks.

For her part, Basinger is no stranger to Hollywood. The actress won an Academy Award for her part in L.A. Confidential and has a host of credits to her name. Given her success in film, her addition should go a long ways in bolstering the depth of Fifty Shades Darker.

At the same time, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Basinger appeared opposite Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro in the 2013 movie Grudge Match. In addition to her role in Fifty Shades Darker, Basinger is working on a new film with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe titled The Nice Guys. Basinger is 62-years-old.

Meanwhile, both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will return to portray Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Freed. In addition to the lead parts, Luke Grimes, Max Martini, and Eloise Mumford will also be returning to reprise their roles. Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are acting producers along with Marcus Viscidi and James.

With production expected to start in the coming weeks, there are a number of other roles yet to be announced. This includes the part of Jack Hyde and Leila Williams, both of whom are important characters to the main plot of the story.

In the books, Hyde is Anastasia’s new boss, who attempts to get with her. However, his advances are met with resistance by both Ana and Christian, making Hyde one of the main villains of the work.

Leila, on the other hand, is a former partner of Christian. Her addition to the sequel should offer an interesting dynamic with Christian’s love for Ana.

Fifty Shades Darker is scheduled for a February 2017 release, while Fifty Shades Freed is set to be released a year after. Producers are planning on filming both movies back to back in order to cut down on production costs and time.
