Gal Gadot Thought She Was Auditioning For The Role Of A Batman Nemesis, Not Wonder Woman

The time is slowly ticking away until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally makes its anticipated appearance in cinemas worldwide, and DC fans have much to be excited about with this entry in the DC Cinematic Universe, not least the live action debut of Diana of Themyscira, aka Wonder Woman.

Following Batman v Superman, the Amazonian princess will be on our screens a lot in the next few years — in the form of a 2017 solo outing and two Justice League movies — and if early footage is to be believed, Gal Gadot seems to be fitting into the role nicely. Getting the opportunity to play one of most iconic female superheroes would be a treat for any actress, but originally Gadot wasn’t actually sure who she was playing. When she turned up to audition for the role, she thought she was trying for a part as a major Batman nemesis.

With two months to go until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits cinemas, the cast and crew have been building some publicity for one of the biggest cinematic events of 2016. Gal Gadot spoke to Empire recently, and revealed that she had very little information about the role she was auditioning for. Heading into the casting room, all she knew was the movie was a Zack Snyder-directed Warner Bros. project.

“I mean, I could have guessed. I thought it was going to be Selina (Kyle), you know? I only knew what role it was when I flew in to test with Ben (Affleck). I was very excited. Any time I had general meetings in LA, I always said that my dream role was to do an empowered, independent woman who doesn’t rely on men.”

It seems she got her wish. They don’t come more empowered or independent than Wonder Woman, a 5,000 year-old warrior from a mystical island populated by Amazonian women. When asked about her approach to the character, Gadot revealed that the character might be a little disillusioned with the human race.

“She’s seen it all. She has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight.”

She didn’t reveal too much — after all, a little mystery for such a huge project is always welcome in this day and age — but it’s no secret just how much preparation the Israeli actress put into the role. As well as utilising her military experience for the role — the actress served for two years in the Israel Defense Forces — she also underwent seven months of intense training before even setting foot on set, as revealed by Healthy Celeb. The actress also hinted how her background in dance may have helped her with certain scenes.

“I was a dancer for 12 years, and now I get paid to work out and do crazy stuff with a lasso.”

It’s a pretty candid, if short, interview with the star. Considering a majority of Warner Bros.’ superhero movies are Batman-orientated, it’s not surprising to see Gadot think about Catwoman first. Possibly the most famous female on DC’s roster, Catwoman has been played numerous times on film, and featured in both modern chronicles of the Batman franchise. To the casual observer, this would probably be DC’s go-to woman. Also, Wonder Woman’s inclusion in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was pretty hush-hush until the post-production stage, and a solo outing was not announced until last year. The prospect of Gadot as Catwoman is an intriguing idea, but from the comments above, it seems she is perfectly fine in the role of Wonder Woman.

So Gal Gadot found the perfect role, one she has dreamed of for quite some time. She also looks the part, if the early Batman v Superman trailers are anything to go by. And she’ll be around for some time. After the ultimate superhero smackdown, Gadot will return for Wonder Woman in 2017, a prequel movie following Diana’s first venture into the outside world during World War I. Then she’ll team up with the Justice League for two movies in DC’s cinematic plan for complete superhero domination.

You can see Gal Gadot make her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when the film hits cinemas on March 25.
