‘Downton Abbey’ Spoilers: Thomas Is In Charge While Carson Is Away And Two Familiar Faces Return

Episode four of Downton Abbey has Thomas in charge while Mr. and Mrs. Carson are spending their honeymoon in Scarborough. Of course, this always means trouble for the downstairs crew, and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

Branson is back, and it is great to see him sitting at the Crawley table once again going round and round about all things Downton. Lady Mary is certainly thrilled to have him and little Sybil back where they belong.

Meanwhile in the downstairs area, Baxter is asked to testify against Mr. Coyle to help protect other young girls from being lured into a life of crime, just like she was. Mr. Moseley is there for support, but she didn’t take too well at first at being told that she should do it. Baxter later changes her mind and decides to testify.

Thomas and Baxter also had a moment between the two of them. Baxter has been more than kind to Thomas when no one else has, and he sort of told her that he appreciated that kindness in her. They both said that they envied the other just a little. He even told her that, no matter what anyone else says, he does mind what other people think about him. Poor Thomas. As Baxter told him later on, “You are your own worst enemy.” That he certainly is.

Anna was pretty sure that she with child, as her waist is thickening. Bates had been getting mighty suspicious, especially when Lady Mary told him that her suitcases were too heavy for his wife to carry. She was expected to have her surgery before she let her husband in on the news. However, Anna started experiencing stomach pains before then.

Lady Mary made a plan to lie to everyone as to why they have to rush off to see a doctor. She made up the story that it was her that needs medical attention. Once there, Anna got the surgery just in time, and it looks like there could be the pitter patter of baby Bates feet running around the downstairs soon. Of course, the doctor told Mary that he is cautiously optimistic. Let’s hope that this couple can be happy for once.

Henry Talbot is back, much to Mary’s surprise. He is obviously still attracted to her, just as is every man she comes into contact with. Could there a wedding in Mary’s future?

Gwen Harding, who used to be a housemaid at Downton, also came for a visit as well. Everyone downstairs knew her right away, as well as Branson. However, Lady Mary thought she looked a bit familiar but couldn’t place her. But then Thomas just couldn’t stand it any longer. He ratted her out and told everyone at the table that she used to work as a housemaid in the past.

This made everyone a little uncomfortable at first, but then once Gwen mentioned Lady Sybil, it all took an emotional turn. The former Downton Abbey servant told the Crawley’s how Sybil’s kindness changed her life. Even Lady Mary changed her tune after that.

Barrow’s intention was to cause trouble for Gwen. However, it all backfired on him, and Lord Grantham chastised Thomas for it. Maybe one day he will learn to be kind like Carson, as Robert told him.

Daisy was still on the warpath this week. She marched upstairs in order to have it out with Cora. But before she could lay into her, Robert walked in and told her that they have decided to let Mr. Mason have the farm after all. It’s a good thing that Lord Grantham saved the day and Cora dodged a bullet. Speaking of Lord Grantham, he is having major stomach issues, which is leading up to something bad.

In the midst of the hospital war between Cora and Violet, the Carsons arrive back home and it is a huge celebration. Everyone from the upstairs trekked downstairs to greet them, even Violet. She quipped to Isobel as they were heading down there, “I haven’t been to the kitchens in about 20 years,” in which Isobel told her that she may need a passport.

Robert was quite relieved when Mr. Carson suggested that they continue to be referred to as Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, as it was getting mighty confusing for everyone. At the end of this Downton Abbey episode, it was a bittersweet moment for Carson as he takes one last look at his old room that he has lived in for many years. He is now starting a new life with his wifein the cottage. How will he handle the change?
