Mariah Carey Still Married! Can Nick Cannon Derail Her Fairy Tale Wedding?

Mariah Carey shocked the world this week with news that she and her boyfriend of seven months, Australian billionaire James Packer, are engaged. The Internet swooned at Mariah’s 35 carat diamond and platinum ring. Now that Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Nick Cannon has given the couple his blessing, it seems like everything is on track for the pop diva and billionaire’s whirlwind romance to have a fairy tale conclusion.

Carey certainly has the appropriate ring. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Carey’s 35 carat diamond engagement ring was designed with input from Packer. It seems Packer wanted the ring to reflect a theme of new beginnings. Packer has a history of showering the women in his life with epic engagement rings. Reportedly, Packer purchased three engagement rings for previous wives or fiancées, and each of them cost upwards of $250,000.

What could possibly stand in the way? Mariah Carey’s last whirlwind romance.

According to TMZ, Mariah Carey is still married to Nick Cannon. At least, as far as the California courts are concerned. Unidentified sources told TMZ that Carey and Nick Cannon haven’t settled the financial details of their divorce yet. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Nick Cannon filed a lawsuit against Mariah Carey in March 2015, claiming that the pop diva sold the pricey Bel-Air mansion the two shared during their marriage. The problem is, Carey never told Cannon she planned to sell the home, and they never worked out how much of the $9 million payday was destined for Nick Cannon’s bank account.

Reportedly, Carey met with celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser in August 2015 to brainstorm ways to fast track her divorce. Wasser’s claim to fame is representing Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian West, Khloé Kardashian, and Maria Shriver in their respective divorces. In fact, Wasser is so well-known that Kourtney Kardashian hired her to put pressure on Scott Disick when their relationship imploded. Sources told TMZ that Carey believed Cannon was dragging his feet in the hopes of scoring a bigger financial settlement from the pop diva. It seems clear that Carey hoped Wasser could put just the right pressure on Cannon to bring their scorched marriage to a speedy end.

What was the rush? Mariah Carey and James Packer started dating in June 2015, and apparently the two were talking marriage even then. Happily ever after couldn’t happen for Carey and Packer while she was legally married to Nick Cannon.

To make matters worse, Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey had a prenup that imposed heavy fines on both of them if either talked to the media about the marriage or its fiery end. Cannon faced a $250,000 fine for dropping any tidbits about his days with Mariah, but Carey faced a staggering $500,000 fine if she slung any mud at Nick Cannon. Cannon stuck to the agreement, though sources claiming to be friends of Cannon called Mariah Carey a drunk, image-obsessed diva. But, could Nick Cannon have hoped that Mariah Carey would slip up and give him a bigger settlement?

Whatever Nick Cannon’s potential motivations for allegedly delaying the divorce, he and Mariah Carey seem to currently be on better terms. Mariah Carey might be more willing to be generous with the financial settlement since she’s marrying a man worth an estimated $4 billion. Unfortunately for Carey, happily ever after may take longer than she’d like.

Consider the divorce of Khloé Kardashian. Reality television fans may remember that Khloé Kardashian filed for divorce from Lamar Odom in 2009, two years after their whirlwind romance and fairy tale wedding. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Khloé and Lamar finally signed their divorce papers in July 2015, but thanks to a backlog of cases, Kardashian and Odom were still legally married in October 2015, when Odom nearly died after a drug overdose.

If Khloé and Lamar’s delayed divorce is any indication, the best Mariah Carey may realistically hope for is a fall 2016 wedding, assuming Cannon signs the divorce papers this week. Hopefully, Carey has her wedding planners working on a lavish, autumn-themed ceremony.
