Trisha Yearwood Cast In ‘The Passion’ On Fox – A Live Musical Event Depicting A Modern Day Version Of The Story Of Jesus Of Nazareth

Country music star Trisha Yearwood has been cast in the upcoming Fox musical, The Passion (#ThePassionLive) which will air live on March 20. A partial cast was announced at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday, January 16. According to The Christian Post, Yearwood will be playing the part of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Also joining the cast as Peter is Latin singer Prince Royce. The two singers tweeted about their excitement in being a part of the epic event.

Tyler Perry will be hosting and narrating the two hour live musical event which will take place in Perry’s hometown of New Orleans, LA. The Passion will feature a modern-day account of the story of Jesus of Nazareth. Perry was also excited about Yearwood and Royce joining the cast and tweeted a shout out to which Yearwood responded back.

Trisha Yearwood is currently on tour with her husband, Garth Brooks, and is also the host of a cooking show on the Food Network, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen. Yearwood is also the author of three cookbooks and just released her 12th album, PrizeFighter: Hit After Hit.

TVLine reported that The Passion not only includes songs sung by Trisha Yearwood, but think about Imagine Dragons’ song “Demons” as portraying Judas’ betrayal or Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love” sung by Yearwood. The fact that The Passion will be a modern-day account means just that, the live televised broadcast will be filmed out in the open, among modern cars and buildings. Yearwood and the other cast members will be clothed in modern-day clothes that we wear right now. When Jesus is arrested, he is put in a cop car and later wears an orange jumpsuit. The character of Jesus, who also sings, has yet to be cast, but executive producer Mark Bracco was hopeful it would be cast soon, saying “We’ve narrowed in on someone I hope we’ll be announcing relatively shortly.”

The Passion was written by Peter Barsocchini (High School Musical) and is based on a Dutch production of the same name. The Dutch version is the original creation of Jacco Doornbos. The Dutch Passion has been aired live for the past few years and has been very successful. There are several videos on YouTube that show parts of the musical, but unless you can speak Dutch, you won’t understand the words. Most of the videos are pretty easy to figure out though, like the trial of Jesus by Pontius Pilate.

The New Orleans production of The Passion will have the main stage at Woldenburg Park, on the banks of the Mississippi River. Over 200 people will join in the procession of carrying a 20-foot cross from the New Orleans Superdome to the main stage.

The video below is a Dutch version of The Passion and gives you a mental picture of what to expect with Fox’s version. In this video, Danny de Munk, who plays the part of Jesus, is singing “Until You Feel My Love” in Dutch.

What do you think about Trisha Yearwood joining the cast of #ThePassionLive and the fact that this will be a live televised production in New Orleans?
