‘Five Nights At Freddy’s World’ Released Early, Creator Apologizes For Missing Features

The creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s just took a huge detour from the usual premise of the game by developing Five Nights at Freddy’s World, a non-horror RPG spin-off. The game was scheduled to release next month but was surprisingly dropped into the lap of PC gamers Thursday night on Steam. Unfortunately, it came with some issues that creator Scott Cawthon is now apologizing for and is promising to fix.

Five Nights at Freddy’s World is a cartoonish take on the horror series that utilizes classic role-playing gameplay and battles. The story explains that Freddy and the gang are on a quest in the world beneath worlds to find the source causing their world to become distorted and broken.

The game states that it features 40 playable characters, multiple endings, multiple difficulties, and a soundtrack from artist Leon Riskin. Sounds like a fun diversion for only $9.99, right? It was released to early, however, and those that bought began noticing some problems.

Interestingly, Five Nights at Freddy’s World still has a “very positive” review rating from the Steam community. Some of the negative reviews point to problems such as character attacks having no explanation on what they do or how long they last. There have also been complaints about long load times and long pauses during gameplay. Character models have also been criticized for bobbing up and down way too much while the pixel-style overworld has some scratching their heads after previous trailers showed a traditional 3D-style.

The criticism and complaints for FNaF World caused Cawthon to pen the following apology letter to fans on the game’s Steam announcement page on Friday.

“This isn’t exactly an announcement that I’m enjoying writing, but it’s one that I feel I owe to the community.

“You know, I’ve been accused of rushing my games ever since FNaF 1, but I’ve never felt that I’d released a game too early… until now.

“There are a lot of features that this game should have had before release, features that I was told about, but ignored and didn’t implement. Features such as being able to see what abilities do during battle, or being able to see a stats page for your characters. These are features that any good RPG would have.

“I got too eager to show the things that were finished, that I neglected to pay attention to the things that weren’t.

“I’m going to fix this, and I’ll be updated the game with these features in the coming weeks.

“So I say this to a community that I’ve enjoyed and respected for over a year and a half now — I’m sorry. I will continue to add features to the game and make it right.”

The iOS and Android ports of FNaF World are expected in the coming weeks. Cawthon hasn’t elaborated on whether he will wait to deliver the promised improvements to the game before releasing the mobile versions.

Cawthon created the Five Nights at Freddy’s series with its three sequels by himself as the developer, publisher, and producer. Game development is challenging in its own right for indie developers who struggle with money and resources. Doing it primarily by yourself is even more daunting and can lead to issues such as this.

Don’t feel too bad for the Five Nights at Freddy’s creator. His terrifying take on animatronic characters coming to life has earned him quite a bit of cash and a reputation. Five Nights at Freddy’s is extremely popular with the YouTube Let’s Play crowd and was in the top 10 most viewed games at one point, per a Game Informer report.

That success led to a novel adaptation, Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Silver Eyes, released in December of last year. Additionally, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to a film adaptation and are currently collaborating with Cawthon to bring Freddy and the gang to the big screen.
