‘Suicide Squad’: Zack Snyder And David Ayer On Jared Leto — The Joker Performance Teased

Suicide Squad movie director David Ayer and Batman v. Superman’s Zack Snyder gave an interesting take on what to expect with Jared Leto’s performance. According to Ayer, Leto is indeed taking a “commitment to the role” in a way that would make an impact to the audience, according to Collider.

He hasn’t been seen in the promotional Suicide Squad movie trailers in any kind of pairings or team-ups other than with him and Harley Quinn, who is played by Margot Robbie. A recent poster even came out showing him standing separately from the rest of the Suicide Squad team, according to Yahoo Movies. This probably makes a fan wonder why this is.

David Ayer mentions the amount of commitment having to remain faithful to playing the Joker, one of the “best known villain in fiction.” That said, Leto has went out of the way of going completely “method” even when the cameras stop rolling and has been immersing himself in the character to the point where he sent a pet rat to Margot, which got around to the rest of the Suicide Squad crew.

In an interview with Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang, even he at one point had possession of the rat, and according to him, at the time of his interview back in June of last year, it was last in possession of Guillermo del Toro, reported Collider.

Ayer cited having enjoyed Jared’s method acting.

“I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them. It’s like tailoring a suit — it’s not one size fits all. But it really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has.”

So for the Suicide Squad movie it looks like Jared Leto is dedicated to the role to the point of immersing himself completely in the character. A testimonial was given by Scott Eastwood, who is in the movie but is cast in an unknown role. He said he was afraid to approach Jared on set as to not mess up his performance, according to Cinema Blend.

Zack Snyder gave his take on Leto’s “zeal” about what’s been going on with his performance.

“The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with (in) every little moment and every little breath…You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing.”

The previous Joker, played by Heath Ledger, also partook in some extreme measures to get into his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. In fact, some actors have went to extreme measures that were unhealthy, like losing a good amount of weight.

According to Ledger’s father in a documentary called To Young To Die, Heath would lock himself in a hotel room for about month to familiarize himself in the role to “galvanize the upcoming character in his own mind.” The actor even kept a diary of his projects. Even as a child, Heath’s sister would dress him up in a nurse’s uniform which is interesting considering he dressed as such for the Batman movie.

So in the Suicide Squad movie, who knows to what extent beyond what was mentioned that Leto would be immersing himself as the Joker. So far, Eastwood seems to respect not breaking his concentration by approaching him on set. But this does give an idea that both Jared and Heath were passionate to this iconic DC Comics character.

The David Ayer-directed movie stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Ben Affleck as Batman, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and many more in the Suicide Squad film as it makes its debut come Aug. 5.
