A Texas man has been arrested on charges associated with the sexual assault and death of a young child. KWTX News reports that 27-year-old Chet Sheltonis accused of raping and assaulting his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son in a case that has produced a plethora of graphic details.

Authorities in Coryell County say that 2-year-old Makai Brooks Lamar died shortly after he was allegedly “discovered unresponsive” by Shelton. The Texas man told authorities that he took the boy to his neighbor, who called an ambulance, but any efforts at saving the child were unsuccessful. The tragedy of a suspiciously dead toddler has quickly been shadowed with the accusations that Chet Shelton sexually assaulted and beat the 2-year-old boy.

A forensic medical exam of the toddler’s body revealed that he had allegedly been violently abused. The medical examiner ruled his death as a homicide after finding that he had been “anally penetrated,” which caused “severe and distinct” trauma to his internal organs. His body also exhibited signs of blunt force trauma, with various injuries to his head. Authorities allege that Chet Shelton anally raped and beat the child, causing his death.

Shelton provided a story to authorities that paints him as a hapless caregiver who rushed to save the life of his girlfriend’s child. He claimed that he was babysitting the boy while the child’s mother was working a double shift. He said that little Makai fell asleep on the couch, but he moved him to his bedroom before going outside to smoke a cigarette. He had intended on taking a shower, he claimed, before checking on the boy. He claimed to police that this is when he found the toddler unresponsive. No reports indicate whether or not Chet Shelton was alone while caring for the deceased tot. However, the Temple Daily Telegram reports that Shelton admitted to smoking meth amphetamines in the 48 hours surrounding the death of Makai Brooks Lamar.

Regardless of the Texas man’s story, his past seems to indicate that he has a history of inappropriate contact with children. Back in 2007, he was accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child several times. He was charged with three counts in May of that year, and then three more the following December. In 2010, he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He does not appear to be listed on any sex offender registry in the state of Texas.

ABC News 13 reports that the Texas Man is currently being held on bond in the amount of $500,000.
