’12 Monkeys’ Teaser Reveals Thrilling Time Travel Adventures [Video]

Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 2 of 12 Monkeys.

The hit show 12 Monkeys is returning to Syfy for a second season of James Cole’s time traveling misadventures. For those familiar with 1995’s Twelve Monkeys, which starred Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt, the Syfy series runs along the same basic plot. At times, keeping up with the time traveling and tracking what happened, and in which order, can make one feel that a score card might be necessary, but overall, 12 Monkeys is a compelling science fiction tale that comments on current social issues. There are moments of levity as well with past beliefs and fads becoming fodder for jokes and puns, both subtle and obvious.

Syfy Debuts A New Teaser For 12 Monkeys And Settles On A Premiere Date

When 12 Monkeys left off with the first season finale, it seemed there would be no more to tell. James Cole (Aaron Stanford) had made his final time jump. Armed with the knowledge that he would no longer be able to time travel, Cole used his last jump to save the life of his one-time best friend, while also sending Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Railly (Amanda Schull) into the future. James believed Cassie would be safe there, but, unbeknownst to him, Deacon (Todd Stashwick) and his team of renegades had stormed the facility housing the time travel equipment.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) seemed bent on spreading the virus as quickly as possible. (For fans of the source film, Brad Pitt’s Twelve Monkeys role was gender swapped and the very talented Ms. Hampshire was cast in his place.) Jennifer has stolen several canisters of the virus, which she plans on releasing.

It seems all is lost and, for all of James Coles’ efforts, the world will again be ravaged by the plague. Or will it?

So it seems 12 Monkeys has more to tell and the two year timeline created by series showrunner Terry Matalas will continue. If the show continues to draw such a high fanbase, that timeline may have to be adjusted. Terry, however, is taking things one step at a time with his exciting plans for season 2.

Spoilers Revealed Directly From 12 Monkeys Creator And Writer, Terry Matalas

Mr. Matalas has big plans for season 2 of the series. No, make that huge plans. He says 12 Monkeys will visit every generation from the 40s through the 70s and that’s nothing compared to what else he has planned. The show 12 Monkeys will visit the future of the future. Terry explains that the show will take a look into a future that fans never thought they would see, adding that it has to be seen to be fully understood.

Matalas also said that the place where 12 Monkeys is now and where it’s headed has all been plotted. Instead of writing episode by episode, the writers are following a scripted story. To that end, the Syfy series showrunner reveals that season 2 will answer the question of what the Army of the 12 Monkeys really is, which includes the motives and ultimate agenda of the group.

Speaking of Jennifer Goines, Terry says she will play an even bigger role in season 2’s stories.

“She’s a tortured, tortured person who has had a lot of really bad things happened to her. But we learn a lot more about Jennifer,” says the show’s creator. “It seems like she’s connected to the changes in time in some way. And maybe that’s part of where her craziness comes from. Jennifer’s a really important character this season. She’s fun to write.”

It will be interesting to see how James Cole is again able to time travel. Will Cassie have something to do with that? Will she also become a time traveler?

Season 2 of 12 Monkeys will premiere on Monday, April 18, on Syfy.
