The Oscar Nominations For 2016 Are Up: Who Will Win?

The nominations for the 2016 Oscars were announced and will be broadcasted live on February 28 in Hollywood at the Dolby Theatre. The top nominee, with 12 nominations, is The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. Mad Max came in second for the most nominations for the 88th Academy Awards.

So, here they are! The nominations for the 2016 Oscars are:

BEST PICTURE

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. Brooklyn
  3. The Big Short
  4. Bridge of Spies
  5. The Revenant
  6. The Martian
  7. Spotlight
  8. Room

Anne Thompson shares her predictions on Indiwire. Although Thompson thinks Spotlight has a chance, she predicts The Revenant will take the win for Best Picture.

BEST DIRECTOR

  1. Adam McKay (The Big Short)
  2. Tom McCarthy (Spotlight)
  3. George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)
  4. Lenny Abrahamson (Room)
  5. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant)

George Miller will probably take the Oscar for Best Director, however, a possible spoiler could be Tom McCarthy.

BEST ACTOR

  1. Bryan Cranston (Trumbo)
  2. Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)
  3. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
  4. Matt Damon (The Martian)
  5. Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs)

Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in The Revenant has everyone believing that he will indeed win the award for Best Actor. Michale Fassbender is in second place in Thompson’s mind, however, Leonardo should easily win.

BEST ACTRESS

  1. Cate Blanchett (Carol)
  2. Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
  3. Charlotte Rampling (45 Years)
  4. Brie Larson (Room)
  5. Jennifer Lawrence (Joy)

Jennifer Lawrence’s win at the Golden Globe Awards isn’t scarring the top two nominee’s, Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan. Larson also took Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her amazing performance in “Room” and is predicted to win the Oscar Award, as well.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  1. Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs)
  2. Rooney Mara (Carol)
  3. Rachel McAdams (Spotlight)
  4. Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight)
  5. Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)

Kate Winslet is an “Oscar Winning Veteran,” therefore it would be no surprise for her to win this category, however, if any of the others had a chance to surprise everyone, it would be Alicia Vikander.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  1. Tom Hardy (The Revenant)
  2. Christian Bale (The Big Short)
  3. Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)
  4. Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight)
  5. Sylvester Stallone (Creed)

Although it is no surprise to see Sylvester Stallone be nominated for this category, he is not the favorite to win. Besides, he hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar since 1976. Tom Hardy, on the other hand, is the front runner after his stunning performance in The Revenant. Do you think Sylvester Stallone can pull off the win and surprise everyone?

Kristopher Tapley tells Variety her similar expectations for the 2016 Oscars. Although Tapley agrees with Thompson that the top two nominees for Best Picture are Spotlight and The Revenant, Tapley thinks that Spotlight can pull it off and win the category.

Tapley also believes that Best Director will go to George Miller, although she thinks that Tom McCarthy and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu also have a close shot, as well.

There is no doubt that Leonardo DiCaprio will win Best Actor. His performance in The Revenant has everyone floored, including Tapley.

Brie Larson was also Tapley’s choice for Best Actress, and Sylvester Stallone has her vote for Best Supporting Actor, although she thinks that Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance could give him some tough competition.

Tapley and Thompson both are agree that Alicia Vikander’s role in The Danish Girl could possibly make her an Oscar Award Winner for Best Supporting Actress, however, Thompson thinks Winslet just may be the front runner.
