The release of LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is right around the corner. TT Games announced free DLC add-ons Wednesday featuring content from last year’s Marvel’s Ant-Man and the upcoming Captain America: Civil War movies. The kicker is that both are exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 owners.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is set to hit all PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms on January 26, but only the PS4 and PS3 will receive exclusive DLC. The Captain America: Civil War Character Pack will release alongside the game and comes with the following nine playable characters from the upcoming film.
- Agent 13
- Black Panther
- Captain America
- Iron Man (MK 46)
- Scarlet Witch
- War Machine
- Winter Soldier
These characters will be available to use through the main campaign, various levels, and the open-world locations, according to game director Arthur Parsons.
The Ant-Man Character & Level Pack is possibly the more interesting of the two simply because it adds an all-new level to LEGO Avengers. Parsons isn’t sharing what part of the film the level will be based on yet other than to say it is “awesome.” Ant-Man had some fantastic set pieces that made use of the character’s ability to shrink. It will be interesting to see how that is utilized in-game.
- Ant-Man (Scott Lang)
- Ant-Man (Hank Pym)
- Ant-Thony (Flying Ant)
- Cassie Lang
- Darren Cross
- Scott Lang
- Hank Pym
- Hope Van Dyne
- The Wasp (Janet Van Dyne)
“We are really bringing Ant-Man and Yellowjacket to life with all the abilities that you’d expect them to have,” Parsons wrote. “The team and I here at TT Games are positive you will really enjoy this DLC offering. But, not only are we bringing you the characters and the level content, the part of this pack I’m most excited about… Ant-Thony the Ant! You’ll be able to fly around on Ant-Thony within the DLC level and then into the main game as well.”
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is more than just the film of the same name. The second installment in the LEGO Marvel franchise includes campaigns based on the original Avengers film and Age of Ultron as well as Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 3, and Thor: The Dark World.
The exclusive PlayStation content deal for LEGO Avengers appears to be a continuation of the deal Sony struck last year with Disney. This resulted in a Star Wars: Battlefront PlayStation 4 bundle and timed-exclusive Star Wars characters and playsets for Disney Infinity 3.0.
Exclusive DLC content, timed or otherwise, has been a sore point among the gaming community. However, it is something Sony jumped into enthusiastically in 2015 when its PlayStation-exclusive line-up of games was thinned with the delay of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. It is not only Disney Infinity and LEGO Avengers that has exclusivity deals, but heavy hitting AAA titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Destiny.
