Larry Wilmore Asks Bernie Sanders: Will You ‘Schlong’ Donald Trump?

Late Tuesday evening, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore was discussing the message in the sky at California’s Rose Parade that read, “America is great! Trump is Disgusting!” As Wilmore contemplated who could be responsible for such a thing, he showed a clip of a Bernie Sanders rally that was happening at the same time as the parade. Just as the words “Bernie did it” came from the lips of the host, the Senator from Vermont — the self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” — came on the stage to defend himself.

Bernie Sanders, claiming to have just come from leafletting, said he was not responsible for the skywriting at the Rose Parade.

“I don’t have to spend money to make Donald Trump look dumb. He does it all by himself.”

To be fair, Sanders has talked about Trump on many occasions, as all current presidential candidates have had to do.

As the Hill noted, the full skywriting message read, “America is great! Trump is disgusting! Anybody but Trump!”

From there, Bernie sat down for a one-on-one interview with Wilmore. This would be the second time Larry Wilmore could #FeelTheBern on his show, as Time recapped, Bernie Sanders was Wilmore’s guest for a “Soul Food Sit-Down” in September.

Wilmore asked, “Who do you think is more against you: The Republican Party or the Democratic Party?”

“Well, we are taking on the establishment. [Pause for cheers.] And I think it’s fair to say that I’m not the candidate of the establishment. I’ll let you draw the conclusions.”

While no official endorsement for Sanders was given by the show or the host, it was clear that many in attendance were strong advocates of Senator Sanders.

The Nightly Show is admittedly very concerned about racism and racial issues in our culture, so it wasn’t long before Wilmore asked Sanders about the “Black Lives Matter” campaign and how a president might be able to engage the American people on such issues. Sanders reiterated that people of all races are upset when police officers shoot unarmed suspects.

Given Sanders’ Jewish upbringing, Wilmore transitioned into a question about Donald Trump saying that Hillary Clinton was “schlonged” by Barack Obama in 2008. Wilmore claimed not to be up-to-date on his Yiddish and asked if Sanders could interpret Trump’s language. Unfortunately, Sanders didn’t have a witty comeback and simply said that Larry would have to ask Trump about that one. He did follow up by saying he still hasn’t gotten over the fact that Trump was shocked when he found out women use the restroom.

Finally, Larry got to the point of the interview to which fans of his show are accustomed: the question where the interviewee is told they must “keep it 100,” meaning to tell the complete truth. If the host or the audience gets the impression that you’re not being 100 percent honest, then you receive a bag of “weak tea” from the host.

“If you win the nomination — which a lot of people hope that you do [pause for cheers] — in the general election, even though you don’t understand this, would you promise to ‘schlong’ Donald Trump?” Wilmore asked.

After pretending to think over his words for a moment, the Senator responded, “Let me say: we will beat him badly. How’s that?”

Just before sending the show to commercial break, the host proclaimed, “That sounds like a ‘schlonging’ to me!”

After the commercial break, Bernie sat down with Larry and two members of the Nightly Show’s staff to further discuss the senator’s campaign.

Being criticized for being “too nice” to Hillary Clinton

It’s been noted before that Sanders has actually come to the defense of his biggest opponent on more than one occasion. After receiving some criticism for that, Wilmore asked Bernie if he felt that a candidate had to be an “a**hole” to become president.

“I certainly hope not,” was his response.

Sanders elaborated by saying that he thinks the “rude” attitude of this election is connecting with the voters because people are angry and frustrated. As he has pointed out several times before, Trump connects with those angry people and convinces them it’s the result of illegal Mexican immigrants and secret Muslim terrorists.

Pay equality for women and minorities

Regular Nightly Show contributor Grace Parra brought up the issue of pay equality. Not only are women making $0.78 to the dollar compared to men with the same job, but Latino women make just $0.54 to the dollar.

Using the question to get in a different but related topic, Sanders says that the first step is increasing minimum wage. Then, more directly answering the question, Sanders says that there’s absolutely “no rational economic reason” that women make less than men. It’s simply sexism. His administration would “pass legislation requiring pay equity for women, period. End of discussion.” He reminded everyone that raising the minimum wage and guaranteeing pay equity would make an enormous difference in the lives of single moms who are trying to raise a family on a single-parent income.

Ben Carson

After being asked about it, Sanders claimed that he had not attempted to stab anyone, saying, “Not lately.”

His first 100 days in office

Wilmore asked Sanders what his priorities would be and what his first 100 days in the White House would look like. Sanders said the first thing he would want to do is pass legislation so that the wealthy and the major corporations pay their fair share in taxes. Once that happens, “we can create millions of decent-paying jobs rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure.” This led into his regular discourse about improving options for childcare, offering free secondary education and expanding social security rather than shutting it down.

His potential running mate

After joking around about choosing between ice cream moguls Ben and Jerry, he was asked specifically if Elizabeth Warren might be his running mate should he win the nomination. Unsurprisingly, he did not confirm or deny that possibility but did say if he was president, he would be working very closely with his good friend Senator Warren.

If you visit the official homepage of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, the full interview with Bernie Sanders is available to stream on-demand. Much of the content had to be cut due to television time constraints.
