John Stamos Opens Up About Addiction, Abortion, And His ‘Horrific’ Past — ‘I Lost Myself’

John Stamos will be leaping back into the spotlight very soon once the Netflix original series Fuller House premieres on February 26. But Stamos has already caused a stir after doing a shockingly revealing interview with Howard Stern in which he opens up about the mistakes he made in the past.

According to People magazine, John Stamos spoke with Howard Stern on SiriusXM radio on Monday, proudly admitting that he’s become an open book. Several members of the original cast of Full House have led troubled lives with plenty of media exposure and very few secrets. But it seems there were still things about John Stamos that the world didn’t know, until now.

“I really don’t have anything to hide anymore,” John Stamos said.

The actor spoke about everything from the deaths of his parents to his addiction to drugs and alcohol, as well as a surprising detail about getting a girl pregnant while in his 20s. He credited a lot of his mistakes to the death of his father and his divorce, saying they sent him “down a wrong path.”

Despite his poor decisions, John Stamos claims he could always keep his drinking problem under control when he needed to. Whenever John Stamos was hired for an acting job, he could will himself back to sobriety, but only long enough to finish the work. He also dealt with an addiction to a prescription medication called Ambien.

“I could stop [drinking] on a dime. I could stop. In the times that I went back, it just sort of deteriorated my life, and who I was, and my morals and my values. I lost myself, I lost my sense of discipline, which my dad taught me so well, and I just became someone – more and more I was just dipping into that dark place. It happened more and more and it just got darker and darker.”

And when he lost his mother in 2014, John Stamos claims he took it “very hard.”

“I derailed over the years. I never really got back on track,” he said. “A piece of me just was gone…. It was a big part of my purpose for many, many years to be there for her and be a good son.”

According to Time, that dark part of the actor’s life culminated with a DUI arrest. John Stamos was caught drunk behind the wheel just this past summer and sentenced to three years of probation. Stamos looks back on the charge now with shame.

“I had a horrific DUI, which I am so embarrassed by,” John Stamos admitted. “I could have hurt somebody, it was really stupid and ignorant of me. And I hated myself for that. It was a bad, bad thing. So I said to myself, I have to stop this up and down, up and down, I have to.”

John Stamos has since been working hard to stay sober and balanced. He claims he doesn’t miss alcohol or getting high “at all.” Surprisingly, the worst influence on the actor was the Ambien, not the alcohol. He claims the drug made it impossible for him to work, and it was the hardest addiction to kick.

“… that d*** Ambien, I’m so happy to be off that. Completely off. I don’t take anything. My memory was starting to get really f***ed up too, from that. Difficult to memorize scripts, I couldn’t remember names and places and things. And that was the hardest thing to kick, by the way. Booze, and whatever, that happened, but the Ambien was tough.”

Among the many confessions, John Stamos also stunned fans when Howard Stern asked if he’d ever gotten a girl pregnant. The actor confirmed Stern’s suspicion and dropped another shocker by revealing the woman he impregnated had an abortion. Stamos claimed it was a “mutual decision” to terminate the pregnancy.

The good news is, John Stamos claims to be on the right track today.

“Those days are over,” he said. “I feel even all the time.”
