‘Scorpion’ Returns After A Short Season 2 Hiatus

Team Scorpion is back and ready to provide fans with plenty of new and exciting geek-filled adventures. The next half of Scorpion’s second season kicks off with the team heading to Antarctica. The Scorpion Facebook page posted, “?#?TeamScorpion? braves the subzero temperatures of Antarctica on this Monday’s winter premiere!” The CBS website also provides more information on the Scorpion premiere episode.

“In order to save a United States Special Forces unit from certain death, Team Scorpion must brave the subzero temperatures of Antarctica. Also, when Happy becomes cut off from the team and lost in a blizzard, Toby risks his life to find her.”

Sounds like another action-packed Scorpion episode, which is appropriately titled “White Out.”

Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction and, believe it or not, Scorpion is loosely based on a real-life computer whiz. According to the Irish Times, the first Scorpion, the actual Walter O’Brien, is indeed an Irish businessman, information technologist, media personality, and computer security expert. He is the founder and CEO of Scorpion Computer Services. He claims to have one the highest IQs (197) on record, and does indeed claim to have hacked NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) at 13-years-old.

For those unfamiliar with Scorpion, Walter O’Brien (Elyes Gabel), along with his group of misfit genius friends, end up being recruited by federal agent Cabe Gallo of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Gallo has history with O’Brien, and convinces him to form the Scorpion team. Scorpion is considered the last line of defense against new and upcoming high-tech threats emanating from anywhere in the world. Besides O’Brien, the Scorpion team is made up of five other people who each bring their own skill set and particular genius to the Scorpion team.

Sylvester Dodd (Ari Stidham) brings to the Scorpion team his mathematician and statistician skills, along with his amazing memory. He also struggles with anxiety and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), which sometimes interferes with what he needs to do for the Scorpion team. He has a sensitive side and found himself attracted to Walter’s sister, Megan (Camille Guaty), when she would visit Walter at Scorpion headquarters. Walter is determined to find a way to cure Megan’s multiple sclerosis, but this is something even this Scorpion genius can’t fix. Megan and Sylvester grow closer, and they eventually marry to stop Walter from forcing treatments on her that she doesn’t want. Walter tries to prolong her life until he can finish what he believes may a device that can at the very least save her cognitive functions and memories, but she knows it’s time for her to let go. In a heartbreaking Scorpion episode titled “Arrivals and Departures,” she passes away with her family and Scorpion friends by her side. Sylvester and the rest of the Scorpion team help Walter deal with her passing in the episodes following her death.

Happy Quinn (Jadyn Wong) can fix almost anything mechanical for the Scorpion team. Unlike Sylvester, at first she is somewhat hostile and doesn’t want to get close to anyone in or out of Scorpion. Viewers understand her behavior better after discovering her backstory details before she was part of Scorpion. When her mother died in childbirth, her father couldn’t cope with a newborn and put her in foster care. With the help of the Scorpion team, she is learning to deal with her past. After finally meeting her father and learning his story, she is beginning to soften up. She has feelings for Scorpion team member Toby Curtis, and is working on letting him into her life more.

Tobias “Toby” Curtis (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is a Harvard-trained behavioral therapist with a knack for reading people, which is a great skill for this Scorpion to have, because he often knows what people are about to do or say. The downside is that Toby has a gambling addiction that sometimes gets him into trouble with the other members of Scorpion. He wants to have a closer relationship with Scorpion team member Happy, but there are times the mixed signals she gives out are frustrating for him because he doesn’t seem able to read her as easily as he can others. At the end of Scorpion’s first half of Season 2, they seem to be working through their issues and are growing closer.

Agent Cabe Gallo (Robert Patrick) is not exactly part of the Scorpion team, but is a special agent with Homeland Security and responsible for talking Walter into forming Scorpion. He brought Walter over from Ireland after the NASA hack incident. He and Walter parted ways after a computer program Walter developed for humanitarian use was responsible for the death of 16 civilians during an attack on Iraq. Walter eventually discovers Gallo’s role in what happened, and is understandably angry and upset. He wants Gallo off Scorpion and that does happen, but the team begins to fall apart, and eventually, they are able to get everything out in the open and move on.

Paige Dineen (Katharine McPhee) is a struggling waitress when she meets Walter and the Scorpion team members. The Scorpion group see in her someone who can help them learn to interact with normal people, while at the same time, they can help her understand her gifted 9-year-old son, Ralph. The attraction between Walter and Paige is undeniable, although both of them are trying their best not to let their feelings and emotions get in the way of their roles in Scorpion. Walter is struggling because he did not believe that love and emotions are real, and he’s finding out that he was wrong on both counts. Paige has become the glue that holds the Scorpion team together, and she helps provide a fresh perspective on how to work through the various issues and problems the other Scorpion team members are dealing with.

Scorpion is a fast-paced series with a lot of action, witty dialogue, and plenty of humor thrown in for good measure. Scorpion does have serious moments, especially when various Scorpion team members are working through emotional issues. Season 2 has dealt more with the Scorpion team learning to mesh together better and, instead of tearing each other apart, they are now learning to support one another, which makes for a much better storyline.
