‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Movie — A Few Things Fans Want To See In The Spin-Off

The Star Wars: Rogue One movie officially has a general story and a set release date for December 16 this year, but not much else is known. Set in the period before A New Hope, it’s about a team of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star and deliver them to their higher-ups, so a team of newcomers can destroy the space station.

The official Rogue One cast currently includes three known names. Felicity Jones from The Theory of Everything plays a rebel soldier, though it’s not public knowledge what her specific role will be. Firefly star Alan Tudyk is another member, but his role is shrouded in even more mystery. Gareth Edwards, the director behind 2014’s Godzilla reboot, will be taking the helm as director, says Telegraph.

“The thing that interests me most about Star Wars is, in terms of what was going on, it was very black and white. The good guys were very good, and the bad guys were very bad. But our movie is basically the [gray] that leads to that [polarized] event that turns into A New Hope. It’s the realities of war – a complicated, layered, very rich scenario in which to set a movie.”

That said, one thing fans can expect is that the Star Wars: Rogue One movie will possibly have a similar tone as the original Captain America featuring Chris Evans. That film took a war movie approach. However, the genre Rogue One writers are said to be aiming for is more like Ant-Man. The Star Wars spin-off is said to be a heist, but on the gritty side in a galaxy at war.

There are some things that the Star Wars: Rogue One movie will have to do in order to give the fans what they want to see.

Many fans are eager to see the backstory behind the line about Bothans dying to get the information about the Death Star. It is mentioned in A New Hope and many want to see the Bothans being heavily involved and risking everything for the intel. With any luck, it will result in some action sequences that rival Attack of the Clones‘ chase sequences with Obi-Wan and Anakin.

On the subject of Anakin Skywalker, the Star Wars: Rogue One movie should give us a bit of a character arc to complete the transition Anakin from a whiny Jedi to Darth Vader. The difference between Vader in Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope makes him look like two different people. Fans need a bridging plot to explain how he hardened himself into the cold and calculating sith lord viewers have come to know.

Long-time fans will also want to see a bit more Boba Fett than ever seen before. It is known he’ll have a spin-off film of his own, but fans are still going to want to see him in action more than ever. Luke Skywalker had three movies to shine, but the bounty hunter barely had twenty minutes across the three original films.

The Star Wars: Rogue One movie should also show fans a bigger glimpse of the Jedi Order struggling under the oppression of Palpatine and Vader’s rule. Viewers saw Yoda and the boys basically dissolving the Council by the end of Revenge of the Sith, but they didn’t get to see how Yoda and Obi-Wan came to peace with being the hermits in the original trilogy. Fans have been wanting a bridge between the trilogies to clarify the transition for the sake of good storytelling.

Finally, it would be great to see an Empire leader getting frustrated at clone troops for being unable to aim, but unable to do anything about it because his or her superiors keep pressing for more troops. It would give us more context as to why the original Star Wars trilogy leading up to the Rogue One movie was full of storm troopers who couldn’t hit anything they tried to shoot. An alternative could be that the rebel group featured in the movie alters the plans for the Empire’s weapons so they never shoot straight.
