Tatiana Maslany Loves The Complexity Of ‘Orphan Black’

Orphan Black has long been admired for the complexity of its characters, which requires many of the actors associated with the series up to five different characters per episode. Tatiana Maslany, who stars as Orphan Black‘s lead clone, says the diversity of her characters is just what she loves about the show. As a new teaser makes viewers question just who is watching whom, Maslany and series co-creator Graeme Manson reveal to fans just what they can expect in Season 4 of Orphan Black.

Tatiana Maslany wears many hats behind the camera, as well as the many versions of herself that she plays on screen in Orphan Black, so she can easily be taken at her word, when she says that she thrives on the complexity of the series.

“What I love about it is just the capacity of any human being to be multiple versions of themselves,” Maslany told Entertainment Weekly at the show’s PaleyFest panel in New York City. “The complexity is what differentiates us and connects us.”

Those complexities will be even more apparent, as Season 4 brings Sarah (Maslany) out of hiding in Iceland to track down the “clone that started it all,” Beth Childs. The hunt for Beth will lead Sarah on a perilous journey in which she becomes entangled in a relationship with a powerful new foe and becomes estranged from those closest to her.

As can be seen, even in the brief synopsis to Season 4 provided by Orphan Black producers, the series has a strong female presence and sends a clear message of female empowerment. Tatiana says, while it was never explicitly stated, the message is definitely there. She adds that the creative team behind the series took the show where they felt it needed to go, allowing the fans to pick up on Orphan Black‘s overall themes for themselves.

What Will Orphan Black Bring In Season 4 And Who Will Be Back?

Starting off with characters that have proven to be fan favorites, Graeme Manson opened up the floor to fan questions and the first to be asked was whether or not Delphine, played by actress Evelyne Brochu, would return in Season 4. One fan even suggested that shots to the liver, such as the one received by Brochu’s character, aren’t always fatal.

Unfortunately, Manson couldn’t have been more vague, either with his non-committing shrug or with his spoken response.

“We need the story to drive itself and we need to stay true to that,” he said. “So that’s the bottom line there.”

On the other hand, Manson did confirm that everyone’s favorite male clone is definitely returning. Season 4 will bring back Ari Millen as Mark Rollins and clones. Kevin Hanchard is also being brought back as Detective Bell and Manson suggests that fans can see a much larger presence from Hanchard’s character.

While the cast and crew of Orphan Black have been highly secretive with details for the upcoming fourth season, it has been said that new storylines will tie in with the beginning of the series.

Even Maslany was keeping her lips sealed, as far as Season 4 details go, or was she?

“That’s what was exciting for the show in the initial stages, [that] nobody knew it was even about clones,” Tatiana said. “It was able to surprise people and that element of surprise is what keeps people coming back.”

It seems like an innocent enough comment on its face, unless Ms. Maslany was alluding to some new twist coming up in the next installment of Orphan Black. And, if anyone were in a position to drop a clue, it would certainly be Tatiana Maslany.
