WWE News: WWE Planning To Move The Slammy Awards Near WrestleMania Time Each Year?

The WWE Slammy Awards are the company’s answer to The Oscars or Golden Globe Awards that seem to draw a lot of interest from fans of entertainment. The show is usually a fun one, where we get to see the year that was and look back on great moments from the year that we loved the most. All awards are voted on by the fans, which is great to see most of the time but it can lead to a similar issue the NBA has with All-Star voting. Sometimes the wrong people get the nod.

Take, for example, the Uso’s winning Tag Team of the Year. Most all of us would agree that The New Day has been the best team of the year without much hesitation — especially since the Uso’s were not together most of the year due to an injury. However, the fans did vote to give us the winners we saw and the thought is that this format will end up staying the same as it has been successful.

According to Cageside Seats, one surprise for WWE was the Breakout Star of the Year award, where Neville won over Kevin Owens, who many gave the award to without any thought as he did seem to have the best year of any new performer. He won both the NXT and Intercontinental Championship in the year, which is by no means an easy thing to accomplish.

The angle that we saw with Dolph Ziggler and Kevin Owens was always planned to happen, as WWE thought Owens would win the award. That is why Neville did not get involved in the angle really. This just led to a small re-write for WWE, which led to what we saw.

One big thing that fans had to put up with was the lack of certain superstars for awards on the night. Many won televised awards, but were not present to receive them, which led to boos from the crowd and many at home upset that the people were not even on a video package. According to the Wrestling Observer, this has led to WWE potentially moving the next batch of Slammy Awards to around WrestleMania 33 time.

The idea is that since big things will obviously occur with top tier talent, they won’t be in town potentially at the time of the current awards day. This means they cannot be around to accept the award, which hurts the credibility of the award, really. Most are in town for WrestleMania week, however, so they easily could be present to accept the awards then. This also allows WWE to continue with bringing people in for their material and away from independent shows that come out to mooch off of the WWE audience that spend the week in town for the big day.

They could have a special gathering in the same arena they do the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony the night before the HOF happens, which gives WWE another event to promote for fans to attend and watch on the WWE Network. Plus, the show could actually go on like an actual awards show instead of a wrestling program in the middle of an entertainment show, which masks as a kayfabe awards show.

If they really wanted the show to come off like a legit awards show, they would go with a network special. Originally, the Slammy Awards were treated like this, but that changed once WWE brought them back and just added them to a WWE RAW show.

It would not be surprising is WWE makes the Slammy Awards a big deal for next year’s WrestleMania season rather than wasting it on a random WWE RAW when they could probably attract people to another event to make money during WrestleMania week. It only helps WWE’s bottom line, so the material is there for this to occur.
