Oh, Snap! Sen. Boxer in hearing smackdown

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) invoked the anger of right-wing bloggers by upbraiding a Brigadier General during a Capitol Hill hearing on June 16th.

The YouTube video below shows the tongue-lashing, during which Senator Boxer reprimands the fellow for calling her “ma’am” in what many right-wingers see as clear anti-military bias from the Democrat. According to US Army protocol, it is accepted to call Senators “Sir,” “Ma’am,” or “Senator.” Well, accepted by everyone but Sen. Boxer.

In the clip, Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh is testifying in front of Sen. Boxer, who chairs the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. During the hearing on the status of the delays in the rebuilding of levees in New Orleans, Walsh addresses her as “ma’am,” proving the following exchange:

Boxer: “You know, do me a favor? Could say ‘senator’ instead of ‘ma’am?”

Walsh: “Yes, ma’am.”

Boxer: “It’s just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I’d appreciate it, yes, thank you.”

Walsh: “Yes, senator.”
