Melissa “Missy” Giove caught in drug bust

Former mountain biking champ Melissa Giove (also known as Missy) has been taken into custody in upstate New York after feds caught her with 200 lbs. of marijuana.

The Associated Press reports that a subsequent search turned up another 150 lbs of pot and $1m in cash in the closet of a co-conspirator. Giove and Eric Canori were charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute over 100kg of marijuana.

The DEA told the AP that a large delivery of marijuana was intercepted by authorities who completed the run near Albany, NY. Giove picked up the trailer, containing 220 lbs of marijuana, and followed Canori to his house to partially unload it. Giove was later arrested at nearby Saratoga Lake.

Missy Giove was one of the first mainstream mountain-bike racing female superstars. Nicknamed “The Missile,” Giove won the 1994 world championship title and two world cups before retiring from racing in 2003.

Giove and Canori remain in the custody of US Marshals.
