Sofia Vergara Consoles Miss Colombia After Miss Universe Snafu By Steve Harvey
Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez is feeling the pain after having the chance to wear the crown from the Miss Universe pageant, only for it to be taken away seconds later. If you didn’t catch it, host Steve Harvey accidentally got the first runner-up and Miss Universe winner switched.
Harvey originally said Miss Colombia had won when, in fact, it was Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. The utter shock and confusion were sprawled on Miss Philippines’ face after Miss Columbia had just taken her walk as the crowned Miss Universe.
Adding insult to injury, after Harvey announced he had made a mistake, the crown was literally plucked from Miss Colombia’s head and placed on Miss Philippines. Wurtzbach was in shock and didn’t get the chance to take her walk as Miss Universe. It was an unprecedented moment in pageant history, and all parties are feeling the mistake in some way.
Gutierrez was followed backstage after the show ended and was asked how she felt. Miss Colombia took it in stride and was a very good sport, as she wiped away her tears and addressed the cameras backstage at the Planet Hollywood Live in Las Vegas. Despite the devastating blow, Miss Columbia tried to keep her spirits up.
“Everything happens for a reason. So I’m happy. I’m happy for all of what I did for becoming this… I’m so happy. Thank you for all. Thank you for voting for me.”
Miss Columbia got support from fellow Colombian and Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara. As Us Weekly reports, Vegara Instagrammed a photo of the beauty to support Gutierrez.
She captioned the photo with, “Still the queen.”
The snafu quickly went viral, given that it was immediately hailed as the most awkward 15 seconds of live television the world has ever seen. Millions of people gathered on social media to react to the worst mix up in pageant history after watching the moment go down.
Celebrities were also in shock and decided to react to the moment.
Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!

In a statement to the Inquirer, Miss Philippines said, “I felt calm when I was called first runner-up because I felt it was fate. But when they announced that I was Miss Universe, I had mixed emotions. I was happy because I really wanted to win but felt sad for Miss Colombia.”
