CL Hits It Big In The United States With ‘Hello B*****s’ — Leader Of 2NE1 Tops Out At No. 1 On Spotify’s U.S. Viral Chart

Since her pursuit of a solo career back in 2013, Chaelin Lee – better known as CL – has been hitting it up. Starting with her first solo track “The Baddest Female” followed by her hard-hitting “MTBD (Mental Breakdown),” CL has shown everyone she has a future beyond her K-pop idol girl group days. However this year, CL dropped one of the biggest bombshells pertaining to said solo career and that her first album would debut in the American music market, not the Korean. Some people were skeptical but after her collaboration song “Doctor Pepper” was well-received, it was clear CL wouldn’t just do fine in said foreign music market but would take it by force.

Recently, CL has tapped back into her K-pop roots per se, not only by reuniting 2NE1 at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards (or MAMA 2015), but with a new song titled “Hello B****s.” It combines what is good about CL as a soloist with what is good about CL as a member of a K-pop idol girl group. Apparently, listeners on Spotify know what’s up as “Hello B*****s” has reached No. 1 on Spotify’s U.S. viral chart.

The good news was first shared by CL on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. She uploaded a screen capture of her phone with the Spotify app open onto her official Facebook account. It showed the United States Viral 50 in which “Hello B*****s.”

As shown in screen capture above, “Hello B*****s” not only made it on the United States Viral 50 of Spotify, but it was ranked No. 1. That is surely a congratulatory accomplishment for CL, or any K-pop artist, who has no backing in the list’s respective music industry. KpopStarz actually provided even more details about CL reaching No. 1 on the Spotify chart. “Hello B*****s” has technically been available on Spotify for almost a month. Tomorrow (Monday, December 21, 2015 for those reading this article later) is the day that will mark the one month anniversary of when the song first made its debut. However, it becoming number one all of a sudden is quite a surprise.

Upon further analysis, there are possibly two reasons why “Hello B*****s became number one on the chart. The first reason is that CL’s newest extended play (EP) Lifted is believed to be released sometime before the year is over. The second reason is the sudden increase in attention for 2NE1 after they appeared together for the first time in over a year at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards earlier this month. While CL was performing her set during the show, there was a moment she descended down into the stage after she finished performing “Hello B*****s.” After that, Dara, Minzy, and Bom ascended on stage. CL would then rejoin them to reunite 2NE1 as they performed “Fire” and “I Am The Best.”

Whatever the reason might be, it garnered enough attention for CL’s newest song “Hello B*****s” to achieve its top ranking. It should also be noted that “Hello B*****s” beat out 21 other songs for the top spot because it along with the other songs made their debut on the list. Unfortunately, CL’s reign at the top was short lived as Alan Walker dethroned her.

Right now, it is unknown when exactly CL will release her latest extended play but if “Hello B*****s” is any precursor for how good the album will be, it may just be only a matter of time.
