‘The Walking Dead’: Does A New Haircut Mean That Character Will Die In Season 6?

Walking Dead fans are gearing up for the arrival of the biggest baddie in the history of the comics, Negan, in the second half of season 6. However, while this heralds the death of a certain main character in the comic book series the show is based on, it seems a new haircut for another cast member may also indicate their demise.

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information and speculation about the second half of season 6 of AMC’s The Walking Dead as well as the comic book series the show is based on. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In the Walking Dead comics, Negan and his barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat, Lucille, signify the beginning of the end for the character of Glenn Rhee (played by Steven Yeun in the television series). However, it is a recent photo of Lauren Cohan (the actress who plays his wife, Maggie, in the TV show) that is concerning fans now.

On December 11, Lauren Cohan turned up to Z100’s Jingle Ball 2015 at Madison Square Garden in New York City sporting a very short new hairstyle – one that hasn’t yet been explained in the first half of season 6 of The Walking Dead, leading to speculation that Maggie could die. After all, iconic hairstyles for TV characters are sometimes written into the actor’s contract and they can’t cut their hair until after they leave the series – think Kit Harrington and his flowing locks in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

While some fans are touting the worst for Maggie thanks to her new haircut, could there be another explanation for the shorter style?

In the comic book series of The Walking Dead, Maggie is a character that is more insecure to start with than the TV series character ever was. While this led to problems in her relationship with Glenn, eventually she learned to overcome her fears and become more like her television counterpart in The Walking Dead. However, during the early stages of her relationship with Glenn, she decided to cut her hair short when she moved to the prison. Glenn went one step further after seeing Maggie’s hair and shaved his head entirely. Therefore, while many TV fans are concerned Maggie could die in season 6 of The Walking Dead, the comic books indicate otherwise.

But what about Steven Yeun? Does this mean he has cut his hair also? His most recent picture posted to his Instagram account shows the actor still with a full head of hair.

Another recent image in Variety also shows Yeun with this normal hairstyle which further enforces the fact that it is only one person in the Walking Dead couple with a new hairstyle. So could this mean that perhaps Glenn will die at the hands of Negan (to be played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and never need to cut his hair like Maggie does? After all, if his hairstyle hasn’t changed and Lauren Cohan’s has, it could indicate a massive emotional upheaval could be on the cards for her in the second half of season 6.

Could the death of Glenn at the hands of Negan prompt Maggie to cut her hair? It’s possible, however, Negan is not going to appear until the very last episode of season 6 of The Walking Dead, and considering season 7 has not yet started filming, the timeline of events does not line up for Maggie cutting her hair off in response to Glenn’s death at the hands of Negan. However, it does still leave the option of Maggie cutting her hair like she did in the Walking Dead comic books even if the event is now happening at a much later date.

Maggie’s recently announced pregnancy in the TV series could also signify an emotional upheaval. Could this be her inspiration behind a new haircut? Only tuning into season 6 of The Walking Dead will reveal the real reason Lauren Cohan has a new hairstyle.
