LAPD Fatally Shoots Man, 26, Inside Of A Los Angeles Emergency Room As He Received Treatment For Arrest Wounds

The Los Angeles Police Department shot a man dead inside of the Harbor-UCLA Hospital yesterday after police allege he reached for an officer’s gun. The 26-year-old man was at the emergency room to receive treatments for wounds he sustained during his arrest when the fatal shooting took place.

The Daily Mail reports that a 26-year-old man was shot and killed inside of a Los Angeles emergency room after police claim he reached for a police officer’s gun. The man was in the emergency room to receive treatment for wounds he received during a combative arrest. The incident began when police were called about a man throwing bottles at his neighbors. When the police arrived, they found the 26-year-old man and attempted to make an arrest. However, according to the police report, the suspect was combative and attacked the police officers, leaving two with injuries. Police used both a taser and carotid restraint to subdue the out-of-control man. The suspect and the two officers that were injured in the altercation were taken to Harbor-UCLA hospital for treatment, where the man was handcuffed to his hospital gurney.

The suspect received the treatment he needed from medical staff and was eventually released from hospital care. Police noted that the man appeared calm enough to be transported to jail and proceeded to remove the handcuffs in a bid to begin the transfer to the jail. However, witnesses say that when police officers went to remove the handcuffs, the man began to attack the officers. LAPD Lt. John Jenal notes that the attack occurred “suddenly.”

Witnesses at the scene claim that the 26-year-old suspect threw a metal stool at officers as they attempted to use a taser to subdue the man. However, as the altercation continued, the man allegedly grabbed for one of the police officer’s guns and he was subsequently shot.

“A witness stated that the suspect reached for one of the officer’s guns and at that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred. One round was fired, striking the suspect.”

CBS notes that immediately following the LAPD officer-involved shooting, medical staff provided treatment to the suspect. However, the man would die from his wounds. The shooting took place at around 2:30 p.m. after the man has spent about 7 hours in the emergency room. The CBS report also indicates that a man on Twitter claiming to be the brother of an ER doctor at the Harbor-UCLS Hospital says that the man appeared to “go crazy” in the ER.

“A man on Twitter posted that his brother is an ER doctor at the hospital. He wrote that some guy ‘went crazy’ in the ER and after the Taser didn’t work, ‘they shot him.’ “

The LAPD shooting is the 20th officer-involved shooting to take place this year, and police confirmed during a press conference that the 26-year-old suspect had died from his wounds. The name of the deceased man has not yet been released as officers contacted next-of-kin. It was also reported that the two police officers injured during the earlier altercation are expected to recover and no further officers were injured during the shooting.

In addition to the 20 fatal officer-involved shootings, it is also noted that LAPD officers have been involved in an additional 15 non-fatal shootings this year.
