‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Spoilers: What’s Coming Next In The Series After ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’?

Star Wars: Episode VIII is still more than a year away, but spoilers are already hitting the internet in regards to what comes next after Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The newly released movie is the first in what will be a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. The movie incorporates elements of the original trilogy, as well as many of the main characters, but it also sets the stage for what fans can expect over the course of the next five years and the coming two movies.

[WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII]

The ending of Star Wars: The Force Awakens reveals one of the major spoilers for Star Wars: Episode VIII — the return of Luke Skywalker. As the latest movie came to a conclusion, Rey flew alone to a blue, water-covered planet and found Skywalker standing on a cliff. Rey returned his blue lightsaber and the credits flashed.

It’s already clear that Luke Skywalker will play a big role in Star Wars: Episode VIII. As Cinema Blend reported, actor Mark Hamill has been busy filming scenes in Ireland’s Skellig Michael for the next movie. The report filled in a major spoiler for the next Star Wars movie, with the story reportedly centering around the search for the missing Luke Skywalker.

“Reports indicate that the searchers do in fact find him near the end, and that he may be at some sort of temple, possibly guarding an ancient evil from being released back into that far, far away galaxy. The prevailing logic is, this is where Skellig Michael comes into play, and if you’ve seen pictures of the locale, which was itself home to a Christian monastery established between the 6th and 8th centuries, is an ideal place to stand in for such a setting. There’s something haunting and almost mystical about the relics on the island.”

There is also a solid idea of just which characters will appear in Star Wars: Episode VIII, including at least one of the major characters killed off in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Kathleen Kennedy, the film’s producer, told the Daily Mail at the film’s London premiere that there will be a handful of new cast members in Episode VIII, along with nearly everyone from the most recent movie, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Peter Mayhew.

Some of the actors are also giving out spoilers for Star Wars Episode VIII, though not terribly revealing ones. Actress Daisy Ridley told Variety that she knew what was coming next, but wouldn’t give much away beside her opinion of the script.

“It’s very good; very good,” she said, then added with a laugh, “Let’s see VII first and then we’ll talk about VIII.”

It could still be difficult, maybe even impossible, to say for certain what will happen in the next Star Wars movie. Though the script is written and filming has started, there is still a long production and post-production process that can lead to changes. It will likely be several more months before solid information may start hitting the internet.

Fans of the series will have quite a bit longer to find out if the Star Wars Episode VIII spoilers are true. The next installment in the series won’t be coming out until May 26, 2017.
