Forget #Glitterbeards, #Glitterpits Are Here

Move over glitter beards, glitter armpits are taking your place!

If you are a social media user, you have most likely seen the hashtag #Glitterbeards. You know, the fad showed pictures of men growing out their facial hair and then dousing it with sparkly glitter. Next up was #Glitterroots, where women caked the glitter down the part of their hair as a fun new hairstyle. Now, the women have moved in on the glitter trends even more, sparkling up a place that may not need to be highlighted — their armpits!

#GlitterBeards and #Glitterroots was mostly for fun, creating a unique, albeit a bit comical, look. However, #Glitterpits is not only for fun, it is the start of a feminist campaign to free the armpit. A group of women have taken to social media to achieve “equality in the under-arms region,” and “show that your furry pits are beautiful,” Cosmopolitan reports.

Many women have been putting the razors away and embracing the no-shave lifestyle for a while now, going against society’s “norms” of what beautiful looks like. However, this new trend shows women flaunting their underarm hair complete with multi-colored glitter. While the hashtag #Glitterpits has been around for a while, it is just recently gaining momentum, just in time for the holiday season.

Even though the #Glitterpits campaign is gathering a huge following, there are some feminists that believe things have gone a bit too far. One Twitter user wrote: “It’s come to a point where I either shave my armpits or throw glitter on them #feminism #glitterpits,” while another wrote, “Feminists have gone too far. Putting glitter on your pitpubes isn’t gonna help women get any rights in other countries. Smh. #glitterpits.”

Then, there are the others that are 100 percent supportive of women glittering up their pits. One social media user captioned her #Glitterpits pic by saying: “Glitter your armpits for #feminism, #genderequality, women, men and gender non conformists, alike! Glitter up your pits, take a pic and post using the tag #glitterpits. Tag your friends and show that your furry pits are beautiful!”

“The technicolour trend takes the#freethepits and #hairypitsclubmovement to a sparkly new level,” another user captioned her pits photo. “Growing out armpit hair has been a movement to empower women and their body ideas-they can do what they want to their bodies at anytime. Glitter pits takes the movement a step further and the message is ‘Don’t embrace your body, celebrate it.’ ”

While the #Glitterpits may be a fun way to be festive, and prove that women are equal to men, it seems as though it may just be a quick social media trend that may soon fade just like the others. Really, how many people are going to go out sleeveless to show off their pits when it is snowing outside? Probably not many.
