Cindy Crawford has known George Clooney for many years; their celebrity-dom goes back a couple of decades, their families vacation together, and Crawford’s husband, Rande Gerber, has even started a tequila business with Clooney. Now, Crawford has opened up to eTalk about Clooney’s marriage to Amal Alamuddin. The couple marked their first anniversary in September, one year after their lavish, star-studded wedding in Italy last year.
Crawford says Amal meets with her approval; the former model says the human rights lawyer is a good match for Clooney, calling her “a real substantial woman.”
“Amal is obviously beautiful, but she’s the whole package. Now George has this woman that he’s really in love with, and she’s smart and engaging and interesting.”
People reported in April of 2014 that the then soon-to-be Clooneys had a private dinner with Crawford and Gerber to celebrate Rande’s 52nd birthday, less than a week after they were engaged. Amal was sporting a grand, seven-carat diamond ring designed by George, that People took pains to point out was “ethically mined.”
Gerber and Crawford attended the wedding, which Crawford says now was over the top — and not how the couples usually like to spend their time.
“Their wedding was pretty spectacular, I have to say that. But for the most part our favorite times are low key, hanging out at the house, just like you do with your regular friends.”
According to the official website of Casamigos Tequila, the friends decided to concoct the brew for their own home use, tapping a distiller in Mexico and holding blind taste tests to get the right mixture. Eventually they decided to market and sell the brand.
Crawford, 49, is currently on a tour to promote her book, Becoming. CBC reports that Becoming is an image-heavy memoir, with 150 photographs of Crawford taken over the years. It includes previously published pics by iconic photographers and personal shots from Crawford’s own collection. She said the book is set to celebrate her upcoming 50th birthday in February.
Crawford, whose now-trademark mole was once considered an imperfection in the modeling world, hopes the fashion industry embraces diversity of all kinds.
“What I’d like to see, and what I’d hope for my daughter now that I’m a mother, is that the fashion community embraces all different types of bodies all different brands of beauty. Fashion really should embrace all of us.”
Gerber and Crawford are parents to daughter Kaia, 14, and son Preston, 16. Kaia, who strongly resembles her mother, has begun modeling in her own right.
Despite following in her mother’s footsteps, Kaia has little sense of Cindy’s own stature, according to the former supermodel. She told eTalk it’s her ability to access today’s stars that make her look good to her kids.
“What really impresses my kids is if another famous person that they are fans of will say hi to me. Or when Taylor Swift asked me to be in her [‘Bad Blood’] video. It was like, you must be cool if Taylor Swift thinks you’re cool.”
As for George and Amal, the pair are yet to have any children. Rumors of an Amal pregnancy started not long after their engagement was announced. Paparazzi have often caught the lawyer in loose clothing, leading to pregnancy speculation. George is 54 and Amal turns 38 in February.
Crawford’s Becoming is in bookstores now.
