Nick Jonas On Being A Gay Icon: ‘It’s An Honor’

Is Nick Jonas a gay icon?

While there’s no definitive answer on it – especially from Nick himself – there’s one thing for sure: the Jonas brother does not see himself as a gay icon.

That confirmation came from his recent cover story in the L’Uomo Vogue. In it, Nick explained how playing gay characters is a challenge for him, but denied the assertion that he is an iconic figure for the homosexual community.

“It’s an honor, but I don’t think of myself as an icon. There should be a lot more straight artists who don’t have a problem with having gay fans. I’m really proud to play gay characters and I’ll continue to do so. I think it’s among the challenges of maturing as an actor.”

Questions about the “Levels” singer’s sexuality stem from his openness to embrace his gay fans. Earlier this year, TMZ provided video of Jonas disrobing in a gay bar, proving that Nick is willing to go the extra mile for his fanbase.

But those questions about his sexuality have been replaced with deciding if his actions are an attempt to appeal to a gay community or bait them. Nick addressed that assertion in a recent interview while promoting the second season of his show Kingdom. In the DirecTV’s Audience Network series, Jonas is a closeted MMA fighter who struggles with his identity.

Jonas denies the gay-baiting claims. “In every situation when there’s an opportunity to be negative some people find the need to be,” Nick said according to Wetpaint.

The Kingdom role isn’t the only gay character Nick plays. In Fox‘s Scream Queens, Jonas also has a gay character part to play. Despite the perception, Nick is enjoying his time on the new TV series alongside Between 2 Queen‘s veteran actresses Ariana Grande and Emma Roberts.

“It’s really crazy working on Scream Queens. There’s an awesome creative team. I’m a big fan of the series and very happy to be part of it.”

Despite the baiting claim, Jonas continues to have a strong following. Queerty referred to Nick as humble in a recent article. However, the article’s headline – Nick Jonas Doesn’t Consider Himself A Gay Icon, World Begs To Differ – demonstrates how some individuals within the gay community feel about the actor.

L’Uomo Vogue is the Italian version of the popular American magazine Vogue. The magazine’s top article also covered other subjects Jonas related, including his family life and his future plans. Nick said his childhood role models included his father – an evangelical pastor – and his mother.

“It’s a major part of my life. I sang in church when I was little, I loved it and it helped in my development as a singer. My faith is still important to me, but I followed my own path. My parents are fantastic, they’re both very open-minded and they’ve always encouraged me.”

Immediate future plans prior to this article appeared to be Nick teaming up with fellow Disney alum Demi Lovato. Jonas and the “Skyscraper” singer are planning a Future Now: The Tour in 2016 with 44 stops from June to September. The two may even do a duet of the popular Adele song “Hello” as both artists have covered the single over the past few weeks, the Inquisitr reported.

Jonas is often connected with Demi Lovato, a singer and actress that has also been questioned about her sexual past due to the lyrics in the song “Cool For The Summer.”
