Jessa Duggar Vs. Kim Kardashian: Whose Religious Baby Name Is More Bizarre?

Jessa Duggar Seewald and Kim Kardashian West, two reality show stars from very different worlds, had similar experiences when it came to choosing baby names for their sons. The Duggar and the Kardashian both struggled to pick the perfect monikers for their little men; they both chose unique, religious-themed baby names that start with the letter “S”; and their babies’ monikers both got mocked on Twitter.

Kim Kardashian gave birth on Saturday, and People reports that she and Kanye West didn’t have a name picked out for their son at the time of his birth. According to E! News, the couple waited two days before announcing that their second child will henceforth be known as Saint West. Kim and Kanye reportedly chose the religious-themed moniker because they view their healthy baby boy as “a blessing.” It also works because “Yeezus” often makes religious references in his music. However, according to USA Today, Kim Kardashian once revealed that she was partial to the fan-favorite name “Easton West,” so perhaps Kanye had to convince her to change her mind about choosing another directional moniker.

Saint West is certainly a unique baby name, but it might not be the strangest celebrity baby name of 2015. Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald gave Kim Kardashian and Kanye West a run for their money by dubbing their first child Spurgeon Elliot Seewald. According to People, Jessa Duggar’s little tyke is named after Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a 19th-century Baptist preacher. Jessa Duggar’s husband described Spurgeon as one of his own personal heroes, even though Spurgeon said some pretty horrible things about Catholics. You could say the preacher was a Kanye West of his time — he was a controversial figure who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, and he was rewarded with millions of loyal fans.

Jessa Duggar actually managed to outdo Kim Kardashian when it came to building up drama for her big baby name announcement. According to People, she and Ben Seewald waited almost a week before revealing that they had settled on the name Spurgeon. Kim and Jessa both had to endure quite a bit of Twitter ridicule after their delayed baby name announcements, and some critics compared their babies’ monikers after Kim revealed that her son’s name is Saint West.

Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald’s extra-long baby name announcement delay might be a sign that they spent a little time arguing over the strange name — perhaps one of the parents was concerned about the moniker being mocked. During an interview with People, Jessa Duggar hinted that a few of her family members aren’t fans of the name when she revealed that some relatives still insist on calling the baby boy “Quincy.” This is a nickname that Ben came up with while Baby Seewald was still swimming around in his mother’s womb.

Jessa Duggar’s Twitter also offers some evidence that the new mom is struggling with the mouthful of a moniker. In her last two tweets, Jessa Duggar has referred to Spurgeon as “little guy” and “Baby Seewald” instead of calling her son by name.

Jessa and Ben might be excited about Spurgeon Elliot Seewald’s first Christmas, but Charles Spurgeon wasn’t a fan of the holiday. According to Spurgeon.org, he called the observance of Christmas a “superstition,” and he said that there’s “no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior.”

At least Saint West won’t be haunted by another man’s quotes for the rest of his life.

Do you think Jessa Duggar or Kim Kardashian came up with the craziest religious-themed baby name of 2015? And do you think Easton West and Quincy Seewald are better monikers than Saint West and Spurgeon Seewald?
