‘Scream Queens’ Finale: Why Lea Michele Is ‘Beyond Happy’ That Her Character Didn’t Die

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers about the season finale of Fox’s Scream Queens.

Like its sister episodes, the two-hour Scream Queens finale wasn’t devoid of killings. Viewers finally learned the whole story behind the Red Devil team. While it was previously revealed that Boone (Nick Jonas) was one of the killers and that Gigi (Nasim Pedrad) took care of the bathtub babies, the identity of the final guilty party was only revealed last night: Hester, aka Chanel No. 6 (Lea Michele). The neckbrace-wearing Kappa Kappa Tau pledge even managed to come out unscathed.

Following the tragic bathtub incident, Gigi, Boone, and Hester spent 20 years in an asylum plotting how they could get back on the sorority. Taking pride as the “brains of the operation,” Hester faked her scoliosis and made her way to the Kappa Kappa Tau house.

To get away with her crimes, she used a stiletto to stab her eye and eventually framed the remaining Chanels. Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) realized that Hester was one of the perpetrators, but didn’t turn her in because Hester threatened to reveal the dean’s crimes (killing her ex-husband and covering up Sophia’s bathtub death), too.

In an interview with Variety, Michele talked about how she found out that Hester was the killer.

“I found out in New York at a press event for the show. It was right when the script for the finale had gotten released. Keke Palmer told me. I hadn’t even read it yet. I was like, ‘Who’s the killer?’ She said, ‘It’s you.’ So nonchalant! The first thing I wanted to know was, ‘Do I die?’ And she said, ‘No, you get away with it.’ I had to corner Ryan and get all the information. I was like, ‘Listen. I’m beyond happy to be the killer, but I want to make sure I don’t die. And that I come back next season.’ And he was like,’You’re fine.’ “

The Glee star doesn’t know what creator Ryan Murphy plans for the next season, but she believes that should there be a Scream Queens Season 2, it would be based on another classic girl film. Scream Queens Season 1 paid homage to the 1988 film, Heathers.

Fox has yet to renew Scream Queens, but the remaining cast members are hopeful. Michele claimed that they’d still play the same characters.

“Yes, we’re playing the same characters in a new location. We would all go somewhere, and it’s explained why we’re going where we’re going. Hopefully Emma Roberts will be back for sure, too. (As for everyone else), it depends on how many gift baskets to Ryan Murphy Productions people can send in time. I think the cast is so incredible. I know Ryan is loyal to everyone, so hopefully everyone will be able to come back at least for something.”

When he appeared at last month’s Fright Fest in New York City, Murphy revealed that they’d retain “three or four” of the original Scream Queens cast members.

“Everybody loves the idea of it, and the conceit is three or four of the cast members [from season 1] survive. [And in the] second season, the survivors go off to a new venue — a horror based venue — and then they have to fight a new killer, a new villain, a new threat.”

The 49-year-old even hinted that a “big pop star” would join the Scream Queens Season 2 cast, with some guessing that it could be One Direction’s Harry Styles.

Nine main characters have survived in the Scream Queens season finale: Grace (Skyler Samuels), Zayday (Keke Palmer), Chanel (Emma Watson), Chanel No. 3 (Billie Lourd), Chanel No. 5 (Abigail Breslin), Denise (Niecy Nash), Wes (Oliver Hudson), Dean Munsch, and Hester.
