Chris Hemsworth Reveals His Insane Diet In Order To Drop Weight Fast For ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’

Although fans are used to seeing a bulked-up version of Chris Hemsworth in his part as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the star had to slim down considerably for his upcoming role in Ron Howard’s film In the Heart of the Sea. According to the Daily Mail, Hemsworth had to adopt an insane diet in order to shed pounds for the lead role of Owen Chase in the seafaring adventure.

In the film, which is based on the true story that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Hemsworth’s character is stranded at sea for over 90 days. This meant that Hemsworth needed to lose weight in order to make these stranded scenes, where food is scarce, more believable.

In order to accomplish this, Hemsworth was put on a strict diet that consisted mainly of fish and veggies. Although he was used to taking in some 17,000 kilojoules for his part as Thor, his new diet had him down to an insane 2,000 to 2,500 kilojoules per day.

In order to cope with this extreme change in diet, Hemsworth told Sunday Life that the battle was all in the mind.

“You try to convince yourself you’re not hungry when you are,” he stated. “What could you have and get away with, if you did eat? And how many extra minutes is that on the treadmill?”

Luckily, all of his hard paid off. In fact, Hemsworth stated that the scenes where they are shipwrecked and without food were easier to act out on an empty stomach.

“None of us had to act hungry or exhausted because we all felt it,” Hemsworth explained in the interview.

Meanwhile, along with his extreme changes in diet, the Australian actor is also keeping busy and challenged with his family life. In fact, Hemsworth recently sat down with Us Weekly and discussed what it’s like being a father of three.

Apparently, taking on an extreme diet is nothing compared to the task of raising three children.

“It feels like I have six,” he revealed to the outlet. “They’re not-stop, active kids. The biggest thing I’ve learned by having kids is that now I know what love is. I know what frustration is. I know the full gamut of emotions, good and bad. I feel I had just scratched the surface prior.”

Although Hemsworth is certainly living a good portion of his life in the spotlight, the star went on to admit that he keeps his family out of Hollywood in order to provide them with as much of a normal life as possible.

“We have a very normal existence,” he shared. “Here, if someone recognizes you, it doesn’t tend to be as big a deal. People are like, ‘Oh yeah, cool,’ then onward with the day.”

Such is not the case in Hollywood, which is one reason why Hemsworth chooses to live in Australia.

“If you are living in Hollywood, people have traveled from around the world to see people in the entertainment business and they’ve got the cameras ready and a bigger deal is made of it,” the Thor star stated. “Here, we have a very normal existence, people are very respectful, and that was why we chose to come here.”

While this means that fans aren’t likely to spot Hemsworth out and about in Hollywood anytime soon, they can catch plenty of the Hollywood hunk on the big screens.

In the Heart of the Sea is set to hit theaters everywhere on December 11.
