Mother Survives Car Crash Only To Be Killed Crossing Highway, Responding Trooper’s Car Also Hit

In a series of unfortunate and tragic events, a single mother from New York miraculously survived a rollover car crash in the early morning, only to be struck down and killed moments later by another passing vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Brittany Leith, and reports are that on her way home from a friends house, Leith’s 2006 Nissan Sentra seemed to have connected with the center median and that is what caused it to overturn. The car flipped over into the left lane of the westbound New York highway. Other motorists were fortunately on hand to assist the mother as she crawled out of the window of the overturned vehicle at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday morning. She managed to make it safely to the right side of the highway, but the good Samaritans were unable to dissuade her from trying to return to the car.

The North Babylon resident reportedly tried to return to the wreckage of her car in order to retrieve her belongings and this is what ended up costing her her life. Huffington Post reported that according to the police, Britanny Leith attempted to cross the busy, three lanes of traffic that are on Long Island’s Southern State highway, but she never made it. Just moments after cheating death and escaping what could have been a deadly car wreck, the young mother was struck and instantly killed by an oncoming car.

The driver of that car, whose identity has not been revealed, says he did not see Leith. The lights on the car had been damaged and gone out after the crash and when the driver suddenly came upon the overturned car in the road he side-swiped it and hit Leith instead. No alcohol was found in the driver’s system, and coupled with the fact that he fully cooperated with the police, there will be no charges against him for the accident.

A state trooper who responded to the fatal car crash and accident also became a victim at the scene. In an attempt to prevent cars from damaging the body of Britanny Leigh, the trooper parked his car in a position to block oncoming traffic on the highway. As he was about to exit his vehicle, the car was struck by another passing motorist. The trooper was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip and treated for back pain and facial bruises. Fox News has it that the driver who struck the trooper will not be charged, either. The entire ordeal has been likened by some to the events of the movie Final Destination.

The police advised that an autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Leith’s body Monday.

Leith was an hairdresser in North Babylon, and the staff at Hair Revue & Co., took to their Facebook page to speak on their heartbreak.

“With sincere pain in our hearts, we the staff of the Hair Revue mourn the loss of our co worker and friend Brittany Leith.. Your kind heart and beautiful smile will be missed.. May you rest in peace sweet girl xoxoxo love from us all”

Leith and her daughter lived with her grandmother following a divorce. The distraught family says they are struggling with how to tell Brittany’s 3-year-old daughter that her mother has been killed. The grandmother says that the little girl has continuously been asking where her mother is.

“How do we tell this little girl? … She keeps saying, ‘Where’s Mommy? Where’s Mommy?’ It’s not supposed to happen this way. It’s just not fair sometimes. Life isn’t fair.”

Britanny’s paternal grandmother also expressed dismay that her granddaughter was allowed to attempt to cross the busy highway after her crash.

“I was told someone was there to help her out of the car, but she could have hit her head and been out of it. Somebody should have held on to her and not let her run back into the street.”
