Camila Cabello And Shawn Mendes Talk Relationship Rumors, Their ‘S**tload Of Fights’

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have been spending a lot of time together recently, and many fans are suspicious of the singers’ seeming affinity for each other’s company — did they team up for their “I Know What You Did Last Summer” collaboration solely in the name of music, or did they decide to write a song together because they wanted an innocent excuse to hang out and chat about matters of the heart?

During a recent appearance on the The Late, Late Show with James Corden, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello insisted that they’re not dating. Things got awkward when Corden asked Mendes and Cabello why they haven’t made out with each other, and it seems as though this question caught Mendes little off-guard — he was so flustered that he actually admitted to doing some heavy-duty flirting with the Fifth Harmony singer. According to Shawn Mendes, he simply failed miserably every time he tried to make a move on Cabello.

“Every time I try to make a move she swerves me off,” Shawn Mendes revealed.

However, Camila Cabello tells a different tale — she claims that her collaborator is the one who isn’t interested in taking their friendship/working relationship to the next level. It sounds like Shawn really needs to work on his moves because Camila isn’t convinced that Shawn Mendes has actually tried any out on her. She told James Corden that Shawn was lying and that she doesn’t recall being hit on by her “I Know What You Did Last Summer” co-writer. According to Camila, Shawn treats her like nothing more than a friend.

“He friend zones me! He calls me kid!” Camila said.

As Seventeen points out, the whole exchange was a bit “fishy” — Shawn and Camila can’t seem to keep their story straight. You can check out James Corden trying and failing to get to the bottom of things below.

Camila and Shawn also displayed a bit of suspicious behavior at Sunday night’s American Music Awards. According to Seventeen, Fifth Harmony was invited to Justin Bieber’s AMAs afterparty, and Camila didn’t pile into the same SUV as the other members of the girl group when she headed to Bieber’s bash — instead, she rode with Shawn Mendes. It’s not proof that Shawn and Camila are dating, but it is evidence that they enjoy each other’s company enough for Camila to risk getting the gossip mill churning by abandoning her bandmates.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello opened up about the first time they met, and they definitely didn’t tell a romantic tale about love at first sight. Fate threw Fifth Harmony and Shawn Mendes together last year when the girl group and the “Stitches” singer were asked to tour with Austin Mahone as his opening acts, and all Camila remembers is telling Shawn Mendes “Hi” while he was playing his guitar. She says she never hung out with Shawn because he was always “in his bus playing guitar and being a loner.” According to Hollywood Life, Camila ended up dating Austin Mahone, but the relationship didn’t last long — the young pop power couple called it quits last November.

Camila and Shawn told Rolling Stone that they didn’t have a real conversation with one another until this summer when they ran into each other backstage at a Taylor Swift concert. They started talking, Shawn Mendes pulled out his guitar and the seeds of their “I Know What You Did Last Summer” collaboration were planted.

Camila is happy that she “got a really good friendship” out of the collaboration, but Shawn Mendes admits that things weren’t always so harmonious between himself and the Fifth Harmony singer. He revealed that he and Camila got into a “s**tload of fights” while they worked on “I Know What You Did Last Summer” together. Luckily, they didn’t have a lot of time to fight with one another — Shawn Mendes told MTV News that it only took 30 minutes to come up with the song’s chorus and pre-chorus.

“And we planned to go into the studio, and it was like an 11-hour studio session where we finished writing the song,” Shawn revealed.

Do you think Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello would make a cute couple, or should they avoid any further fighting by staying in the friend zone?
