It’s not the only so-called white student union Facebook page that will appear, but that doesn’t mean they are all real or attributed to the school they claim. The Facebook group for NYU White Student Union is fake, reports the New York Daily News?.

Meanwhile, the Facebook pages that might be real are being condemned by some schools. The anonymous Facebook page titled “Illini White Student Union” is being criticized by the University of Illinois, reports MSNBC. Created in response to the Black Lives Matter movement and a rally held on Wednesday at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, the “Illini White Student Union” Facebook page claimed it was forming to fight Black Lives Matter “terrorism.”

By performing more detailed searches on Facebook, such as typing “white student union UC,” more results appear. There’s the “UCLA White Student Union” community with 381 likes. There’s the “UC Davis White Student Union” with 70 likes on Facebook. And there are also “causes” or communities like the “UCF White Student Union” and the “UCSB White Student Union” page on Facebook as well.

In fact, there are more than 30 purported “White Student Unions” popping up across the country, reports the Washington Post?. How schools will respond to these real and fake pages will likely be based on the specific university. The University of Illinois decried the white student union Facebook page attributed to their school and issued a statement about the “disturbing” white student union Facebook page. Barbara Wilson, the Interim Chancellor at the university, and Edward Feser, the Interim Provost at the University of Illinois, wrote their thoughts about the white student union page, calling its purpose one that was intended to intimidate.

“Yesterday, someone created a Facebook page designed to intimidate students who attended the Black Student Solidarity Rally on the Quad. Along with many of you, we immediately reached out to Facebook and asked for the page to be removed. Within three hours, the site was down. Additional versions of the site have been created and subsequently removed. We will continue to voice our concern to Facebook, if the site resurfaces.

“That anyone on our campus would think it’s appropriate to create such a site is extremely disturbing. We recognize the right to free speech, and we encourage you to exercise that right when you see examples of racism, discrimination or intimidation on our campus.

“The site called for monitoring African American students, and some students are telling us they now feel unsafe. We must have a safe environment for everyone – where people can gather and express concerns without fear; where we can build understanding by truly listening to each other; and where we can benefit from the ideas, talents and perspectives of everyone in our Illinois community.”
