Carlos PenaVega And Witney Carson Reveal Cruel Trick ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Producers Played On Them

Carlos PenaVega and his pro partner, Witney Carson, had a very good reason to think that they were safe during Monday night’s episode of Dancing with the Stars. Unfortunately, the DWTS producers had just played a cruel joke on the couple by making them think that they’d be competing during tonight’s final show.

Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson started the night out on a high note with their judges’ choice redo dance, a foxtrot to “The Hills” by The Weeknd. The couple earned a perfect score for the routine, which was so sexy that there was literally steam coming up off of the dance floor. Judge Julianne Hough called it the sexiest foxtrot she’s ever seen, and she praised Carlos for improving his lines. Bruno Tonioli pointed out that PenaVega’s footwork was also greatly improved, and Carrie Ann Inaba said that Carlos proved that he was worthy of being in the finals.

Unfortunately for Carlos PenaVega, Dancing with the Stars viewers decided that he wasn’t worthy of being in the final three. Carlos capped off his night with a freestyle hip-hop routine that included guest appearances by a trio of eliminated DWTS competitors: his wife Alexa PenaVega, butter queen Paula Deen, and social media star Hayes Grier. Julianne said that Carlos was a “stand up guy” for inviting the other contestants to perform with him, Bruno said the dance was “loaded with cheeky fun,” and Carrie Anne called it the “freshest, flyest freestyle” she’s ever seen. Like the other remaining couples, Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson were awarded a perfect score for their freestyle routine.

Carlos and Witney weren’t just feeling good at the end of the evening because they had a perfect night. During an interview with Glamour, the couple revealed that they thought they were safe because of something that happened earlier in the day. During dress rehearsal, the couples go through the whole elimination routine, and “99 percent of the time,” the couple that gets eliminated during dress rehearsal does not get sent home. Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson were fake-eliminated during Monday night’s dress rehearsal, so they assumed that they were safe.

“That’s why we were like, ‘Oh, we’re good!” Witney told Glamour backstage.

Carlos said that he also thought they were safe after the fake-out elimination, and he said that what the Dancing with the Stars producers did was “messed up.”

“Why would they do that?” PenaVega asked.

According to Witney Carson, the DWTS powers-that-be did it because they “know you don’t expect it.”

This isn’t the first time Dancing with the Stars has seriously screwed with Carlos PenaVega’s head. During Week 9, Carlos and Alexa PenaVega were the two contestants who were in jeopardy at the end of the night. They were the first married couple to ever compete on the show, and a lot of DWTS viewers likely assumed that the powers-that-be would eventually create this dramatic moment. In his pre-dance package that aired earlier in the night, Carlos had said that he wanted to beat his wife. However, after Alexa was eliminated, Carlos cried like a baby and told Alexa that he wished he was the one going home. He could also be heard telling his wife that this is exactly what “they” wanted. It was a rough moment, but Carlos claims that competing on DWTS has actually strengthened his marriage.

According to the Wrap, some Dancing with the Stars fans are just as shocked as Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson were when they learned that their quest for the Mirrorball Trophy had come to an end — the general consensus from Carlos and Witney supporters seems to be that Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold should have been eliminated instead. This is likely because Carlos’ score average for the season is higher than Alek’s, making it easy to argue that he’s the superior dancer. However, Alek looks just as good as Carlos shirtless, and he has that whole hero thing going for him that helps him win the patriotism vote.

Luckily for Carlos PenaVega fans, they haven’t seen the last of him. The former Big Time Rush star didn’t feel comfortable pretending to be a stripper earlier this season when he performed a Magic Mike-themed routine, but, because the fans loved it so much, he’ll be performing it again during tonight’s show. Carlos is also set to star as Kenickie in Fox’s Grease: Live! special, which is set to air next January.

The final episode of Dancing with the Stars Season 21 airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Are you upset that Carlos PenaVega isn’t one of the final three contestants with a shot at winning the Mirrorball Trophy?
