Walmart Turning Cyber Monday Into Cyber Sunday, Black Friday Deals Abound Online

Walmart just turned Cyber Monday into Cyber Sunday. The big box retailer successfully revamped the Black Friday shopping frenzy by starting Thanksgiving Day sales several years ago. Walmart doorbusters will abound both online and in stores from the beginning of the Thanksgiving sale through Cyber Monday this year.

Walmart Cyber Sunday deals begin on November 29 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Getting the jump on Cyber Monday shopping dollars may prompt competitors to do the same or miss out on millions of early Christmas shopping dollars.

The discount retailer is “quadrupling the number of Cyber Monday specials” this year, according to Walmart.com CEO Fernando Madeira. Walmart decided to begin the Cyber Sunday tradition because many customers now have “faster Internet spread to more homes and smartphones,” CNN Money notes.

“It can be exhausting for working parents and Millennials to stay up past midnight to shop online, only to wake up early the next day to get ready for work,” Madeira said in a press release.

As is typical during Black Friday sales, some of the steepest discounts are taken on highly sought after and expensive electronic items. Walmart is offering a Samsung LCD TV for $498, which routinely sells for $700. The Samsung Galaxy smartphone will be on sale at Walmart for $99, a big price cut from its current $350 sticker price. Dell laptops will be marked down from $449 to $319 during the Walmart Black Friday sale.

The popular Air Hogs Video Drone commonly sells for $109 but will be reduced to $75 during the Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Sunday sale. The drones are touted as one of the hottest gift items this Christmas season. Store deals also include price reductions on 4K TVs, 3D printers, and Fitbits.

Approximately 90 percent of the Walmart Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Cyber Sunday, and Cyber Monday sale items are also eligible for a special free shipping deal. In 2014, shoppers spent about $2 billion during Cyber Monday, USA Today reports.

During the Christmas shopping season this year, Walmart is reportedly expecting 75 percent of its online traffic to come from mobile devices, either through the store’s mobile web browser or via the company’s app. The discount retailer expects 210 million visitors to shop from its website via the free Walmart app in November and December. Just two years ago, “only” 18 million shoppers utilized the app to shop at the online version of the brick-and-mortar store.

Unlike the Obamacare website crash fiasco, the Walmart website is reportedly prepared to handle the massive influx of visitors.

“We are ready to go, ready for the customers,” Madeira said.

Thanksgiving Day sales initially began in the late evening hours after all of the turkey was put away and the dinner dishes had been washed. More commonly now, Thanksgiving sales begin by 5 p.m. and prompt some holiday visitors to shove down a piece of pumpkin pie quickly so they can get to Walmart, Target, or the local shopping mall. Big Lots and Rural King are among the retailers opening during the early morning hours on Thanksgiving Day this year.
