Ed Sheeran Will Have A Role In ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’

Ed Sheeran, British singer-songwriter and musician, made his acting debut on The Bastard Executioner, the medieval drama by Sons of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter. Sheeran has just revealed this week via social media that he will have a role in the upcoming Bridget Jones’s Baby, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Spent the day being an actor in the new Bridget Jones movie,” Sheeran wrote in an Instagram post. “Loved it, you’re gonna love it too.”

The film will see the reunion of Renee Zellweger’s Bridget, now entering her 40s, with Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy. Just a few weeks ago, it had been rumored Ed Sheeran might have some kind of involvement with the Bridget Jones project when film crews were reportedly spotted filming at one of the singer’s concerts. Not much is currently known about Bridget Jones’s Baby and it is unclear who Sheeran will be playing in the film, and how big his role will be. Although, according to his Instagram post, “spent the day” could mean that his scene(s) were filmed and finished within one day of shooting, which would suggest that the singer has a small role.

Sheeran was introduced to Kurt Sutter on social media, when the singer was watching Sons of Anarchy and sent out a tweet saying, “Whoever does the music on Sons of Anarchy, I want to buy him a pint.” Sutter responded and ever since then the two have kept in touch, which may have made it easier for Sutter to call Sheeran up to possibly play a character in his new project, The Bastard Executioner. In discussing his role in Sutter’s newest FX show, which debuted in September, Ed Sheeran said he has not quite yet become fully comfortable being in front of the camera as an actor.

“I feel very out of place. I feel like I need a few more days to sink in to the idea of acting. I’m very good with a guitar in my hand, but I feel a bit lost without it. I think I just need more practice with acting. I’m glad no one is telling me I’m not good yet. I’m doing stuff and no one is saying, ‘bad sh–. That’s either them being polite which I don’t think they would be on this show, or it’s going well.”

Ed Sheeran most recently performed at A&E’s Shining a Light: Conversations on Race in America concert, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on November 18. According to HollywoodLife, the concert was a response to tragedies, like the Charleston Church shooting in June, and aimed to bring more awareness to the racial progress that has been made in America. John Legend, Jamie Foxx, Sia, Nick Jonas and a whole host of other artists performed, as well.

Ed Sheeran’s second studio album, x, debuted in the summer of 2014, on June 23. The album peaked at number one in both the U.K. and the U.S. It was announced earlier this year that x has been nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Sheeran earned the Brit Award for Album of the Year as well as the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year.

The latest entry in the Bridget Jones series, based on the books by Helen Fielding, follows 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and its sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which came out in 2004. Sharon Maguire, director of the first film, is returning to helm Bridget Jones’s Baby, and Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast. Bridget Jones’s Baby, starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey is set to be released on September 16, 2016.
