Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” Trailer Hits Web [Video]

The newest trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s upcoming film The Master hit the web today.

The new trailer shows more Joaquin Phoenix, and viewers are treated to more of the score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. The trailer also features a creepy Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd, the leader of a religious organization that is supposedly based on Scientology, according to the Washington Post. We are treated to more of Hoffman’s character, described as a writer, doctor, nuclear physicist, theoretical philosopher, and most importantly, a “hopelessly inquisitive man.”

IMDB describes The Master as “A 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as ‘the Master’ whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man.”

The Master will miss the summer blockbuster season and release more at home in the fall line-up of Oscar contenders. Hoffman’s subtle and disturbing performance matched by Phoenix’s listless Freddie Sutton will likely make for one of the most riveting and psychological films of the year.

“You’ve wandered from the proper path, haven’t you?” Hoffman’s faux-Ron-Hubbard asks Phoenix’s character. “You seem so…familiar to me.”

The film also stars Amy Adams. Here’s the trailer, let us know what you think in the comments below:
