‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ Reunites Original Cast — With A Twist

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is finally coming out, and where other sequels often fall short, this movie is gearing up to be a smash hit just like the first one. This is blatantly obvious in the trailer, which debuted on The Today Show on November 11.

Nia Vardalos tweeted her very excited thanks for the debut of the trailer.

The first movie brought in an astounding $370 million worldwide on a budget of only $5 million. Vardalous also earned an Oscar nomination for the original screenplay. In fact, the first movie was really a success no one would have predicted. Vardalos wrote the screenplay, which became a one-woman play that was then taken on by producers Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson. Now, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not an unknown, and has big shoes to fill to live up to the impression the first movie left behind.

Vardalos announced in 2014 there would be a sequel to the movie. The Los Angeles Times reports that Vardalos was recently interviewed on the NBC Morning Show about My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and confirmed the whole family is back.

“We gathered the entire family back. Everyone in the first movie is back for the second movie. We filmed in the same locations. We have the same producers. We are still a small independent film now being released by the behemoth Universal Pictures. But you know, we are still the same family and we’re really close, and we had a great, great time.”

The original cast includes Vardalos as Toula, John Corbett as Ian, and Toula’s entire family. Their daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) is off to college, somewhere far away from her big Greek family if she has anything to say about it.

Vardalos also said that when she and Corbett were on the Toronto set of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, they had several experiences of déjà vu.

“We’re standing there and John [Corbett], goes, ‘Weren’t we just here six months ago?’ It was lovely having the whole cast back together. We hugged each other daily and ate a lot. When the candy cart came around, we are scraping off candy. It wasn’t like a normal set where people had to fit into Gucci jeans.”

As for their life, in the movie more than 13 years have passed and they have spent their time and focus raising their daughter, Paris, to the neglect of their own relationship.

“We have spent all of our time on our daughter and we’ve forgotten to look at each other. It’s pretty typical.”

As for the quality of the script, Corbett admitted to USA Today that he was worried it wouldn’t be as good, but he was wrong.

“I thought I’m just going to brace myself and know it’s probably not going to be as good. But I gotta tell you, I finished it with my jaw on the floor. In my opinion Nia made it funnier than the first one, more touching and better on a lot of levels.”

So, whose wedding is it in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2? It’s no secret, since the trailer lets fans in on it, but those who think it is their daughter, Paris, are way off. Instead, it is Toula’s parents, played by Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine, whose priest never signed their marriage license. They decide it’s time to bring the whole family together for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 so Toula’s parents can get properly hitched. Opa!
